BEST BUY IN TOWN! 1991 Eagle Premier ES low miles, full power queror, and when it comes to our being purified and recreated from our contact with death, only God Himself, or His agent the kohen, has the power to purify and redeem. The red heifer command- ment is mystifying because it deals with the most mysterious question that life throws at us — death. Unlike the mikvah into which a person enters by himself, here it is the kohen who must sprinkle the mix- Lure of ash and water on the person who has come into contact with the dead. Ashes are the ultimate end of all life; water is the agent of rebirth. Defilement by death can only be nullified by God Himself. God lives eternally and it is only that quality which can give comfort in the face of death. But how does God the Eternal One redeem us from death? The fact is that our eternal covenant with the Almighty guarantees that death will never vanquish Klal Yisrael. The Jewish people live forever, and so the children and grand- children will have the oppor- tunity and privilege of realizing the goals and vi- sions of their parents and 1-- grandparents. And even more to the point: since we transmit part of ourselves to our children and children's children, not only do they live through us, but we live through them. In a more limited fashion, the terminally ill patient must garner the courage to face each day in a positive fashion because he still has a vital message to convey to his children: teach them how to live and how to die. The Midrash declares: Our patriarch Jacob never died; as long as his children live, maintaining his ideals and customs, he lives as well. The generation of the desert had the strength to continue wandering for 38 years because they knew that although they would not be privileged to enter the Promised Land, their chil- dren would. And through their children they would be entering Israel as well. Herein lies the mystery of the red heifer, Jewish histo- ry's response to Hitler, God's answer to the tragic death of Jewish individuals. The grandchildren redeem the grandparents; the Eternal One of Israel purifies and vindicates the past genera- tions by confirming His covenant of redemption with the Jewish future. ❑ $8,995 Village Jeep-Eagle 3616 Woodward N. of 13 Mile 549-5300 THE TABLE CONNECTION All work done in-house by our craftspeople!
