Clinton Choice
-Worries Jews
Last week's appointment
of Harold Ickes as conven-
tion manager for Gov. Bill
Clinton may intensify con-
__ erns among Jewish
Democrats about the Arkan-
sas governor's strategy for
turning out a big Jewish
vote in November.
Mr. Ickes was a top aide to
the Rev. Jesse Jackson dur-
,.h-ig the 1988 campaign,
`',hen Jackson forces pressed
for a pro- Palestinian plat-
form plank.
Some Jewish Clinton
backers are grumbling that
Mr. Ickes' rise in pro-
minence represents a shift to
the left in the Clinton cam-
paign — and, possibly, a
turn away from the Jewish
community and the pro-
Israel agenda.
There are also concerns
that Mr. Ickes' convention
r ole could contribute to
renewed debate in platform
deliberations over Israel's
policies, and over a possible
pro-Palestinian plank.
Some Clinton backers —
led by David Ifshin, the
longtime Jewish activist
who, until recently, served
as general counsel to the
campaign — had pressed for
the hiring of some well-
known Jewish political fig-
ure to keep things running
smoothly with the commun-
ity.
Instead, after some inten-
sive behind-the-scenes ac-
tivity, that function has
been largely turned over to a
Clinton campaign func-
tinoary, Karen Adler, who
reports to Mr. Ickes.
Arlen Specter
Faces Battle
Things look bleak for Sen.
len Specter.
The senator easily won the
recent GOP primary in Pen-
nsylvania. But Democratic
political newcomer Lynn
Yeakel's surprisingly strong
victory in her party's
primary indicated that Mr.
r'bpecter may face an uphill
battle to win a third term in
S
the roeate.
P ro Israe l politicos in
Washington privately con-
cede that the odds favor Ms.
Yeakel.
"This is the wrong election
for Specter," said one pro-
Israel activist here. "His
style is that of a prosecutor.
That is not likely to play
well in a race against
Yeakel, who is capitalizing
on negative images. [1]
