Clinton Gains
From Perot

There was bad news for
Jewish Republicans in a re-
cent study by the National
wish Democratic Council
a group not exactly indif-
ferent to the woes of its GOP
counterparts.
The NJDC poll, which
‘ooked at exit poll data from
several primaries, indicated
that at least a plurality of
,?wish Republicans will
i support independent can-
L‘ didatee Ross Perot over Pres-
ident Bush.
In California, 63 percent of
Jewish Republicans pre-
ferred the insurgent can-
c.idate. In New Jersey, 42
percent lined up behind Mr.
Perot, and only 33 percent
' backed Mr. Bush.
Arkansas Gov. Bill Clin-
ton, the presumed Dem-
ocratic nominee, ran well in
the Jewish community —
although in California,
almost 27 percent of Jewish
Democrats questioned in-
dicated that they, too, would
prefer the Texas billionaire.
The survey tended to con-
firm what most analysts are
have been predicting: Jew-
• .1,1 Democrats are more like-
--4 to support Mr. Clinton
than non-Jewish Democrats,
while support for Mr. Perot
among Jewish Republicans
ris stronger than among non-
Jewish Republicans.

The radically new face
'_hat Congress will have next
year is causing sleepless
nights for pro-Israel activists
here.
Some groups, such as the
' National Jewish Coalition,
hope to avert the nightmare
by educating candidates
about the Middle East before
they even arrive in Wash-
ington.
The coalition, which is
composed of Jewish Repub-
licans, will hold an initial
briefing meeting in New
Jersey later this month to
educate possible Capitol Hill
newcomers about their
agenda.
"Many of these people
have never been in politics
before," said Mr. Brooks.
'`It's important to begin
talking to them before the
election."
He said the session will
concentrate on the foreign
and domestic issues of con-
cern to the Jewish commun-
ity, including "the
