ne of my favorite
childhood stories was
about two monsters
that lived on either side of a
mountain. The two had left
society to live in the wilder-
ness and enjoy the simple
things in life. They soon dis-
covered that the other lived
around the mountain, and
they began to talk to each
other. Once, when the sun
was setting, the monster on
the west side of the mountain
said, "What a pretty sunset."
The other monster could not
see the sun; he saw the moon
rising. This monster said, "No
— what a pretty moon is ris-
ing." The two monsters began
a long and heated battle as to
the position of the sun and
moon. They could never agree
on the sky, and rightfully so
— from their own standpoints,
each was correct. Eventually,
the monsters began a big
fight and started hitting the
mountain. They hit it so hard
that the entire mountain fell
down. Then the monsters saw
the shocking truth — not on-
ly was the sun setting, but
also the moon was rising
They both apologized and
then enjoyed the sunset
together.
Though this children's story
was discussing fictitious

monsters, it could almost as
easily have been discussing'
the conflicts between the
Arab world and the Jewish
people. Like the monsters, '
both feel they are right in
disagreements and are blind-
ed from seeing the other's
reasoning. Unlike the
monsters, though, the moun-
tain that divides them doesn't
seem to be moving.
The Arab — Jewish conflict - ;
seems to have existed sine_
the beginning of time.
Through constant tensions
and frequent wars, the na-
tionalities have developed a
strong hatred for each other.
