Tay-Sachs Tests
Are Available

Tay-Sachs screenings to
identify carriers of the gene
for Tay-Sachs Disease are
available year-round at the U-
M Health Service (for U-M.
students) or through your"
physician or local hospital. ;\
screening consists of a simple
blood test.
Tay-Sachs is an inherited!
disorder caused by absence o;
a vital enzyme, resulting in
deterioration of the nervous
system. It is always fatal
usually by age three; to date,
there is no cure.
Eighty-five percent of all
"carriers" of the gene for Tay
Sachs are Jewish. One in 25
Jews of Eastern European
descent is a carrier. Carriers
themselves are unaffected by
the disease. Only when both
the husband and wife carry
the Tay-Sachs gene is there a
chance that each pregnancy
