Poland Refurbishes
Devasted Cemetery

Glogowek (JTA) — Local
authorities in this small
town in southern Poland
near the Czechoslovak
border expect to begin work
this month to restore the
devastated Jewish cemetery
and arrange for a memorial
plaque to be placed on the
building that once was the
town's synagogue.
"We hope to begin work on
estoring the cemetery in
the second week of July,"
the town's mayor, Jan Bor-
sutzki, said in an interview.
"We want to make sure we
do it right, so we are examin-
tag just how to go about it,"
said.
To this end, he said, the
awn had made contacts
ith Jewish community
aders in Berlin, as well as
.with experts from Israel and
Warsaw.
"We also want to build a
monument at the cemetery,"
le said.
About 18 Jewish families
ved in Glogowek before
Torld War II. At that time,
,e town was in Silesian ter-
,tory that belonged to Ger-
many. Its German name is
Oberglogau.
_The Jewish cemetery, just
utside town, was dev-
Aated during the war and
r)andoned afterward. It is
;tally overgrown with
hrubs, vines and trees, with

uprooted.
Mr. Borsutzki said the in-
itiative to renovate the
cemetery was his own, and
he hoped that other towns in
the area would also take
steps to restore the Jewish
cemeteries there.
"This is the beginning —
maybe other towns will
follow suit," he said. "I've
tried to publicize our effort.
Maybe when we start, others
will follow."
A major problem with the
restoration is lack of funds,
he said. Another town offi-
cial said the job would prob-
ably require about $5,000 —
but, given Poland's severe
economic crisis, the town
simply did not have this
sum.
Local officials said one
money-saving solution
would be to use as workers
for the job some of the local
workers currently on
unemployment lists who are
receiving unemployment
compensation.
Glogowek's former syn-
agogue is a simple structure
that was converted into a
shop after the war.
No Jewish elements are
left — except the holes on
the facade where a Star of
David was once affixed can
be seen. "We want to affix a
memorial plaque to the
building telling what it used
to be," said a town official.
