include the tip . . . At owner
Frank Passalacqua's other
place, Mario's on Second
Boulevard, his Sunday cham-
pagne brunch is $16.95 adults
and $8.95 under 12.
SOPHIE AND HARRY

Hope, holds its third annual
golf outing Aug. 5 at the
Links at Pinewood in Walled
Lake . . . Call Richard Gibbs,

WHEN IT MOVED to Six
Mile and opened in 1972,
Kathy's Cheesecake was
located in 450 square feet.
Today, 20 years later, the en-
tire original store, which still
exists, would fit into owner
Kathy Koch's Livonia oven.
She began making cheese-
cake at home with her only
outside account being the
Whittier Hotel and its Gold
Cup Room . . . She moved to
Six Mile with three others .. .
London Chop House, Lou's
Deli and the Vineyards where
Norm's is now located.
When Kathy opened in
1972 she remembers paying
$16 a gallon for pure vanilla
extract . . . Now, the price is
$175 a gallon.
November 1991 was a big
turning point for Kathy's
Cheesecake . . . That's when
it became certified kosher
with Rabbi Jack Goldman
and the Metropolitan
Kashruth Council of
Michigan . . . Kathy's opera-
tions are West McNichols,
East Eight Mile in Detroit
and West Eight Mile in
Livonia . . . and her accounts
number 28 besides doing a
booming retail business.
That oven in Kathy's
Livonia locale may be big .. .
but there's something even
bigger on the premises . . . the
600-square-foot freezer . . .
Kathy had dreams of getting
big, but not this much.
GET-TOGETHER by past
members of Elaine Levin
Chapter, National Asthma
Center (C.A.R.I.H.), is being
planned for July 9 . . . Call
Sandy Iwrey at 661-4730.
FOLLOWING ON the
heels of their Cocina del Sol
on Northwestern Highway,
Tres Vite in the Fox Theatre
Building, Rattlesnake Club
and Riverplace Inn, is soon-to-
open Buster's Bay by Jimmy
Schmidt and Mike Hitch.
The contemporary Ameri-
car restaurant designed in
tradition of a New
England-style boat house,
will open privately for Detroit
Institute of Arts, July 10, on

Orchard Lake Road at Pon-
tiac Trail . . . It is the former
locale of Meating Place,
Treats and Roadhouse.
MATT BRADY'S Tavern
opened its second restaurant
last week with over 400
guests coming and going at
the previous Maxwell's in
Holiday Inn of Farmington
Hills, Grand River and 10
Mile . . . The first operation is
on Southfield just north of 13
Mile . . . both owned by Susan
and Mike Fayne and Matt
Brady.
Those Matt Brady burgers
. . . and turkey burgers, of
course . . . were the hits of the
grand opening along with a
slew of other good menu
items . . . But Wendy Fayne,
Mike's sister and Susan's
sister-in-law, is excited at
another delicacy morsel .. .
Whenever she goes out West,
the first place Wendy heads
for is a Jack-In-The-Box .. .
she loves those mini tacos . .
No more dreaming for Wendy
. . . they're now also at Matt
Brady's, where she downed
six with dancing eyes.
On hand to taste those Matt
Brady burgers and a lot of
other items were Reid
Ashton, Golden Mushroom
co-owner; Ernie Palumbo,
former restaurateur and now
host at Ginopolis'; Randy
Burgess, general manager of
the Norm's chain, and a cou-
ple more whose request for
anonymity is respected.
If it becomes a chain, which
many predict, that personal
service demanded by Susan,
Mike and Matt will continue
to be a dominant factor.
NEW LOOK at Matt Pren-
tice's Cafe Jardin in Troy's
Somerset Collection on Big
Beaver, Troy, is ready for its
new tenants (Neiman Mar-
cus, Barney's New York, Joan
and David, and other upscale
shops) . . . Owned by Unique
Restaurant Corp., it's a place
where shoppers can break-
fast, lunch, dinner or snack
while doing the seeing and
being-seen scene, and mall
employees enjoy the fast
service.
CONGRATS . . . to brother
Marvin and sister-in-law
Shirley Raskin . . . on their
40th anniversary . . . to
Shirley . . . on her birthday.

owner of Golden Mushroom
with Reid Ashton has been
