The flight, the first for many of the students, was to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the rescue mission which brought 14,500 Jews to Israelfrom E- thiopia. It was "the anniversary of a miracle," said Barbara Ribakove Gordon, executive director of the North- Ameri- can Conference on Ethiopian Jewry. El Al, whose fleet transported the Jews on the rescue mission, sponsored the New York voyage. Among those welcoming the children, who ranged in age from 10 to 14, were the Boys Choir of Harlem, which sang emotional renditions of "Hatikvah," and "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav;" Uri Savir, the departing New York Consul General of Israel; Leon Hasdai, vice presi- dent/general manager of El Al and Captain Arieh Oz, one of the pilots of Operation Solomon, who commanded the flight over New York. A surprise passenger on the flight was the diminutive dynamo of sex therapy, Dr. Ruth Westheimer. Dr. Ruth, as she is known, was a refugee who escaped the Nazis by fleeing to what was then Palestine. She served in the Haganah, and then later emigrated to the United States. The celebrated sex- ologist visits Israel at least every summer. Racial harmony seemed to be the recurrent theme throughout the day. Before boarding the plane, children clapped along to several rap • numbers, by Dr. David Lazerson and his black- Jewish entourage. Once aboard the plane, the sky became a classroom as the children were shown videos about last year's • airlift and scenic vistas of Israel. The children were treated to kosher "skyburgers" and french fries for lunch, not all of which were kept down by the overly excited students on the turbulent flight. The children snapped pic- tures and loudly applauded as the plane touched the runway at the end of the flight.
