own at the city dock
in Oslo, the fishing
boats unload their
hauls, and weathered
Norwegian fishermen get
ready to sell their catches.
Also at the dock, tour boats
are ready to take passengers
for a cruise along part of the
Oslo fjord. Sixty miles long,
the fjord is a curious salt-
water arm of the sea that
stretches inland.
Along the way, passengers
will see the outline of the
modern city hall recede and
the hills loom larger. Out on
the water, they see a spacious
city of hills, forest and fjord.
Although it's a capital city,
Oslo has almost a frontier
quality. Minutes from its
downtown area are woods and
hills. Its city hall leads direct-
ly to the water. It's one of the
world's largest capitals,
spread over an area of 175
square miles — matching Los
Angeles in size — yet it
has a mere half-million
inhabitants.
Of this number, only 1,000
are Jewish, but they main-
tain an active Jewish life. The
very fact of a Jewish presence
in this Viking capital makes
it of interest to the Jewish
traveler. There are also
several sites of special Jewish
interest.
Oslo's sole synagogue is
located on a tree-lined
residential street, at 13
Bjergstien. Built in 1920, it is
a simple white structure.
From the outside, it looks
beautiful in twilight, just as
Shabbat services begin at
8:30 p.m. on a Friday evening
in summer. (In winter, when
sundown comes much earlier,
they sometimes begin at 3
p.m.)
"Welcome to Norway!" con-
gregants often say to Jewish
tourists visiting the
synagogue. Like their non-
Jewish compatriots, they are
proud of Norway, share the
national passion for skiing —
people joke here that
Norwegians are born with
skis on their feet — and also
are proud of their synagogue.
They can readily share that
pride with visitors. Most
Norwegian Jews, especially
the young, can easily converse
in English, which is almost a
second languge in the three
Scandinavian capitals.
Inside, the sanctuary has an
arched ceiling and stained
glass windows defined by a
Star of David design.

the Nazis occupied Norway
from 1940 to 1945, the
building remained intact and
its ritual objects were
untouched.
After the war, the Jews of
Oslo reconsecrated their
synagogue with a ceremony
attended by the late King
Olav V, who was then crown
prince, and other dignitaries.
This was the first time a
member of the royal family
entered a synagogue in
Norway.
Next door is the Jewish
Community Center, built in
1960, which is headquarters
for the small religious school
and for various organizations,
including youth clubs.
There are several
monuments in the city of in-
terest to tourists because they
