Max M. Fisher
Judge And Guide
L
The biography of Max
Fisher assures prolonged
considerations in judging
emerging developments that
affect Israel and world
Jewry and leave their marks
on mankind. The
distinguished leader judged
well in choosing Peter
Golden to be the author of
his life story just published
by Herzl Press/Cornwall
Books under the title Quiet
Diplomat, Max M. Fisher.
The influence exerted by
this leader will call for
endless reviews and com-
ments, especially in view of
the new leadership in Israel.
There is so much more than
diplomacy in the Max Fisher
story; this personal expres-
sion of admiration for him
justifies an introductory
comment on the totality of
the book.
The manner in which Mr.
Fisher leaves his mark upon
the important personalities
in Jewry and the American
political sphere can be
judged by the respect with
which he treated those with
whom he was associated. He
never resorted to name call-
ing; he was never abusive.
He knew how to deal with
the basic issues and did not
rule out differing views.
Many judgments about
Mr. Fisher's achievements
will be marked by apprecia-
tion for the gifts of leader-
ship as well as philanthropy.
There is one word that will
summarize his approach to
everything he embraced; it
is dignity. His dignified
dedication to his com-
mitments will surely be
guidelines for proper leader-
ship in days ahead.

Evacuation Efforts
Under Way In Moldova
cent of Moldova's Jews hold
approved family reunion ap-
plications, enabling them to
make aliyah rapidly if they
choose.
But after an upsurge in
fighting last week that left
some 400 people dead,
Moldova has been relatively
quiet in the last few days.
In Tiraspol, the Jewish
Agency has set up a support
center for Jews who wish to
leave. Several buses were al-
ready dispatched to
transport evacuees.
The Jewish Agency also is
in touch with Ukrainian au-
thorities to enable the Jews
to cross the border from
Moldova into the Ukraine
and define their status as
refugees, thereby enabling
them to receive assistance
and to prepare for their im-
migration to Israel.
Meanwhile, Simcha
Dinitz, chairman of the Jew-
ish Agency Executive, said
over the weekend that he
expected the formation of a
new government in Israel to
increase the number of im-
migrants from the republics
of the former Soviet Union.
But members of the Zionist
Forum, headed by Natan
Sharansky, said immigra-
tion would not increase until
the employment situation
improves.

Jerusalem (JTA) — Jewish
officials in Odessa and
Kishinev are organizing a
rescue operation of Jews
from the battle zones of
Moldova, where fighting
between ethnic Russians
and pro-Romanian
Moldovans has escalated in
the last week.
Representatives of the
Jewish Agency for Israel and
• the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee are
organizing the operation,
which involves the transfer
of Jews from the Trans-
Dniester region of Moldova
to the capital of Kishinev or
• to Odessa, in neighboring
Ukraine.
Ethnic Russians in Trans-
Dniester have seceded from
Moldova, which is ethnically
Romanian and may rejoin
that country.
Four hundred Jews have
already been evacuated from
the region — 280 to Odessa,
100 to Kishinev and several
families to Kiev, the Ukrai-
nian capital.
Some 170 of those taken to
Odessa reportedly have ex-
• pressed their desire to im-
migrate to Israel.
Of the estimated 40,000 to
50,000 Jews living in
Moldova, some 13,000 live in
the battle areas of Tiraspol
and Bendery. About 70 per-
$61 9 pe.
