The state Senate already
has passed this bill, which
now rests in the state House
of Representatives.
Members of Hadassah
Greater Detroit Chapter, the
National Council of Jewish
Women Greater Detroit Sec-
tion and Michigan Region
ORT all advocate a woman's
right to choice.
These groups fear the anti-
abortion forces in Michigan.
Judy Rosenberg, state pub-
lic affairs co-chair for the
National Council of Jewish
Women, Greater Detroit Sec-
tion, expected the court's de-
cision. She says she hopes the
Supreme Court judgment will
spark enough concern so vot-
ers get out to the polls in the
Aug. 4 primary.
"It's very important for peo-
ple who are pro-choice to be in-
volved, particularly in the
primary," Mrs. Rosenberg
says. "Nobody is pro-abortion,
but it needs to be an option."
Meanwhile, U.S. Senate
and House leaders have said
they would pass legislation to
protect abortion rights. They
are not expected to have
enough votes, however, to
override an expected presi-
dential veto.
Rep. Maxine Berman, D-
Southfield, is a leading leg-
islative advocate of abortion
rights. She says the Court's
decision translates into disas-
ter, taking away a woman's
right to privacy.
"The Court has left the shell
of Roe vs. Wade intact and has
invited restrictions in the state
legislature, making it clear
that voting in the legislative
election will have a lot of ef-
fect," she says.
Local Hadassah Vice Presi-
dent Audrey Sobel says she
is disappointed that "the
Court upheld the most oner-
ous burdens of the Pennsyl-
vania law" — a provision re-
quiring minors to obtain
consent of a parent or a state
judge.
Freda Jackson, chairman
for Michigan Region of Wo-
men's American ORT, is fear-
ful that the Supreme Court
decision will pave the way for
Michigan laws to become
more restrictive on abortion
rights.
"The Michigan government
is not pro-choice," she says.
"Jews have the attitude or
need to have the attitude and
responsibility to vote for the
candidate who will serve them
best." ❑
