bodies. They were on the
receiving end of warm ap-
• plause and tributes June 16
when they were honored by
140 guests at the first B'nai
B'rith All-Star Tribute
Banquet.
Proceeds from the dinner,
which was sponsored by the
B'nai B'rith Foundation of
the United States and the
B'nai B'rith Michigan
Regional Council, benefited
B'nai B'rith's youth-serving
agencies: the B'nai B'rith
> - Youth Organization (BBYO)
• and the Hillel Foundation.
"All three of us feel deeply
about what we do," said Mr.
Klinger.
"I'm rarely very emo-
tional," said Mr. Sperling,
"but I was very touched and
humbled."
"What made the dinner ex-
tra special was the fact that
bowling gained some recogni-
tion," Mr. Zate said.
"We've always felt that
it's been the bowlers who
have helped hold this
organization together. In our
lodge's league (Downtown
Fox), we meet 36 times a year.
Lodges themselves don't do
that. I think a lot of people
join B'nai B'rith here so they
can enjoy the camaraderie of
the bowling leagues."
Mr. Sperling said, "Many
lodges here are identified now
by their bowling league. The
n sport has been a real impor-
tant cog in the wheel across
the country, but for a long
time it seemed like it was
treated like a stepchild.
"That's changed. It's now a
full-fledged member of the
family. The International
B'nai B'rith Bowling Associa-
tion now has a seat on the In-
ternational B'nai B'rith
Board of Governors. That's
how important bowling has
become."
Mr. Klinger is a past presi-
dent of the Metro Detroit and
the International B'nai B'rith
bowling associations and he
was the 1987 recipient of the
Service Achievement Award
from the international
association. He currently
serves as chairman of the
Metro Detroit and interna-
tional awards programs.
Mr. Sperling has been ex-
ecutive secretary of the Metro
Detroit Association since
C 1978. He's on the board of
governors of the international
association and he's chaired
the International Sectional
Bowling Tournament here
three times.
° Mr. Zate, who founded the
Downtown Fox League, is the
'president-elect of the Metro
• Detroit Association. In 1987,
he received an Award of Merit
from the International
Association.
