But few in the crowd
wanted to discuss the issues.
"How often do you get to
be 10 feet away from the
president of the United
States?" said Southfield Of-
ficer Richard Markowitz,
who was off-duty but wanted
to get a close-up view.
Mr. Mellec, who joins Mr.
Markowitz as one of a hand-
ful of Jewish police officers
in Southfield, was stationed
outside the Civic Center and
didn't get to hear the forum.
But he did get to see the
country's chief executive.
"He was a lot more laid-
back than I expected," Mr.
Mellec said. "I thought he'd
be more energetic. I don't
think he gets to visit every
U.S. city. This says sortie-
thing nice about Southfield."
Several members of the
city's volunteer auxiliary
police department were on
duty.
Col. Joe Glazer, a court of-
ficer, has served as a vol-
unteer officer for 26 years.
The president's visit marked
one of his most thrilling vol-
unteer assignments, he said.
"We're proud of Southfield,"
volunteer auxiliary Maj. Irv-
ing Greenberg said. "We do
everything. We do finger-
printing, crowd control. This
is the most exciting part.
"But we are here to do a
job," Mr. Greenberg added.

Southfield City Council
members greeted the presi-
dent upon his arrival. Coun-
cil Member Vicki Goldbaum
had her picture taken with
Mr. Bush. Council Member
Denise Alexander, who is
leaving the post this week
for a job in Washington with
the Department of Labor,
said the visit was a "great
final moment" in her council
career.
Council Member Eli
Robinson viewed the visit as
an opportunity to show the
country that Southfield is a 4
successfully integrated city.
His wife, former Southfield •
school board member Zelda
Robinson, joined Mr. Robin-
son at the event.
She said the president
spoke well, adding, "I didn't •
like some of the things he
said. But I expected it.
"He is still the president,
and he deserves respect,"
Mrs. Robinson said. "They
did pick Southfield because
it is a place of strong law en- .40
forcement."
It was the first time Mrs.
Robinson saw the president
in person. She noted she was 4
just 50 feet away. "He seem-
ed sincere."
Mr. Bush left Southfield
with a little gift from the III
city — a jogging sweat suit
with the Southfield insignia.
He also was made an
honorary member of the
