BACKGROUND:
Steve
Leibowitz grew up in the -
Philadelphia suburbs in the
Havertown and Ardmore --
areas. His father owned a
tavern, and Steve often
helped his dad.
During his teen years he
was a dedicated swimmer
and member of the high
school swim team. He
graduated from Haverford
Senior High School in 1973.
"I worked all through high
school and put myself
through college. I'm very
proud of it," he said.
He spent one year at the
University of Pittsburgh
and completed his college
degree at Temple Universi-
ty. All through his college
years, he taught and coach-
ed swimming at the local
YMCA. After graduation,
he owned a small rug in-
stalling business. He then
spent a year in the family
business and a year in the

becoming the controller of
an entrepreneurial firm.
When the YMCA needed ,
an accountant in 1985, he
applied for the job and
began working there. It was
a natural place for him to
work since he taught swim-
ming there for so many
years. (He continued
coaching swimmers until
his move to Detroit.) He
began as a financial director
and was promoted several
times before accepting his
position in Detroit in
February 1992. In Detroit,
he oversees the budget and
accounting for the 16 bran-
ches in the area.
As a newcomer, he is lear-
ning the area and hopes to
be involved in the Jewish
