LOBSTER SPECIAL

written with a new lyricist
(Ervin Drake), and I just had
a sense there was a kind of
Christmasy feeling to the
tune, but it also was a love
— song," he said.
"So it's not really about
Christmas; it's about how
falling in love with somebody
made that person think of
Christmas: 'I look in your
eyes and suddenly it's
Christmas,' which is a happy
feeling.
"The song was used that
way rather than as an out and
out 'I'm Dreaming of a White
Christmas: which I wish I
had written."
Through professional or-
ganizations, Mr. Lane has
kept close to other song-
writers, often accepting
significant responsibilities
regarding the business
aspects of their careers.
As 10-term president of the
Songwriters Guild of
America, he instituted a
royalty collection plan that in

recovered $7 million in un-
paid fees for colleagues. Duke
Ellington was so grateful for
this plan, which netted him
large sums he had been due,
that he periodically sent Mr.
Lane one-line telegrams —
"Love you madly!"
Mr. Lane serves on the
board of the American Socie-
ty of Composers, Authors and
Publishers (ASCAP); as a
voting member of the
Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences and with
the American Theatre Wing
Tony Award Administration
Committee.
He continues to compose,
working at the keyboard dai-
ly. His wife of more than three
decades, Lynn, who accom-
panied him to Detroit, said
the pastime she enjoys most is
listening to her husband play
his music.
Outside of music and fami-
ly, which includes a daughter
and three stepdaughters, his
favorite activity is golf.
With the completion of the
first set of albums featuring
him as a performer, talk of a
revival of Finian's Rainbow
and overtures involving a new
writing project, Mr. Lane re-
mains upbeat about his craft
and expanding opportunities:
"I'm like an athlete who
doesn't have a particular race
to run, but I'm always keep-
ing in shape, hoping the right
thing will come along and I'll
be ready for it." 0
