just developed into song-
writing."
During his early teens, he
was signed by Remick's Music
Co. to write songs, and at 17,
he had music in four stage
shows.
After he composed a string
of pop numbers for bands, the
Irving Berlin Music
Publishing Co. sent him to
California in 1933 to pursue
film possibilities, which he
did for 22 years.
The first song, sold within
weeks of his arrival on the
West Coast, was for the movie
Dancing Lady with Joan
Crawford and Clark Gable. It
was "Everything I Have Is
Yours" with lyrics by Harold
Adamson.
"It's a major standard, and
it's the standards that keep
us alive," laughed Mr. Lane,
who later had two songs
nominated for Academy
Awards, "How About You?"
with lyrics by Ralph Freed,
and "Too Late Now," with
lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner.
"I'm lucky to have worked
with the best."
The best included Ira Ger-
shwin, Frank Loesser,
Dorothy Fields and Howard
Dietz. What came first — the
music or the words — varied.
"It doesn't really make any
difference what comes first,"
he said. "In my case, most of
the time the music comes
first, but on many occasions
I've written to a title or a lyric
that's already in existence.
People who write music
become able to work in all dif-
ferent ways."
For the production of On a

Clear Day You Can See For-
ever, which teamed him in the

'60s with Alan Jay Lerner,
the music came first. Mr.
Lerner tried eight or nine
unrelated compositions over a
three-month span before com-
ing up with lyrics for the
musical's title song. It stands
out as one of Mr. Lane's
favorites.
"I've written tunes I've lik-
ed as well or better where the
lyrics did not satisfy me and
therefore the songs did not
become favorites?" he said.
"Still, my likes for what I do
keep changing. When I'm
working on a show, I'll have
certain favorites, and as each
one takes off and becomes a
hit on its own, it's like a child.
That one's taken care of and
now there's another?'

Mr. Lane is among the
group of Jewish composers
with successful Christmas
songs to their credit. "And
Suddenly It's Christmas" is
on the first of two albums of
his music he recently record-
ed with singer/pianist
Michael Feinstein.
