Stieglitz Works
O.K. Harris Works of Art in
Birmingham will mount the
first of many exhibitions
dedicated to the exploration
of photography beginning
with the presentation of
photographic works from the
Camera Work publication
issued under the guidance of
Alfred Stieglitz between the

years 1903 and 1917. Camera
Work was an independent
American photographic
magazine that provided a
forum for the discussion and
criticism of new work; it acted

as a catalyst in the fight to
have photography accepted as
a medium of artistic
expression.
Photographers of this
period included Annie W
Brigman, Alvin Langdon
Coburn, Frank Eugene,
Baron A. De Meyer, Edward
Steichen and Clarence White
whose work will be on display
at O.K. Harris Works of Art.
These artists were allied with
Mr. Stieglitz to promote and
develop photography as an art
form.
O.K. Harris Works of Art's in-
terest in photography will
continue through the sum-
mer with an exhibition
mounted by Detroit's promis-
ing photographic artist Lisa
Spindler Aug. 1-22, followed
by British photographer Daf-
fyd Jones Aug. 29-Sept. 26.
O.K. Harris Works of Art is
at 430 N. Woodward Ave., Bir-
mingham. Gallery hours are
Tuesday through Saturday,
11 a.m.-6 p.m., and by
appointment.
Works On Paper
Are DIA Exhibit
The Detroit Institute of
Arts special exhibition
"Among Friends: Contem-
porary Works on Paper from
a Collection formed by In-
geborg and Jan van der
Marck," will run through
Aug. 23.
The exhibition includes 54
works on paper that trace the
25-year marriage and collec-
ting partnership of Jan van
der Marck, DIA curator of
20th-century art, and his late
wife, Ingeborg.
Also included are elegant
and severe minimalist works
by Tadaaki Kuwayama, Sol
LeWitt and Bernar Venet; ex-
amples of pop art by Claes
Oldenburg, George Segal and
Arman.
Jan van der Marck will
share his views about a
number of works 2 p.m. July
12. The gallery talk will
begin at the entrance to the
exhibition and is free with
museum admission.
