common interests their
favorite TV shows "Full
House," "Beverly Hills
90210" and "Who's the
Boss?"
Dr. Goldberg said such
friendships fostered through
the program are becoming in-
creasingly common. "We've
had a great deal of reaching
out as the years have pro-
gressed," she said. "This year,
one of the pen pals invited her
pen pal to her house for
lunch, and then they went to
a movie. More pen pals are ex-
changing phone numbers."
Lillian Schostak said her
son, Michael, has kept up his
friendship with his pen pal
since he was a part of the
Open Minds — Open Arms
program two years ago.
"My kids go to Hillel
because Jewish education is
important to me, but I don't
want them to be secluded in
the world," she said. "We live
in a mixed neighborhood in
Southfield, and they'll attend
Southfield-Lathrup (High
School) after Hillel. I don't
want them to feel they can on-
ly be around Jewish kids. I
want them to see what the
rest of the world is like."
Leah Weiss said of her pen
pal and new friends, "Just
because people are a different
color, they're not going to be
weird or anything; they're
just the same as us. She was
the same as practically all my
friends at school."
Hillel student Garrett
Field's comments spoke of the
similar experiences of blacks
and Jews throughout their
histories. "I liked the idea of
Jewish and black kids joining
up together because both of
them have always been segre-
gated," he said.
Schulze student Jonathan
Reed said that through the
program he learned "that it's
nice to have a friend, it's nice
to have a teacher to give you
a friend, and that Jewish peo-
ple are nice."
Ms. Rose has applied to the
Rhodes Foundation for a $900
grant to fund next year's pro-
gram, and some parents and
students already have
suggestions.
Hillel student Rachel
Elrom recommended, "Each
year there would be a dif-
ferent culture to learn about.
At the end of the year, we
could record things about
that culture."
Jonathan's mother, Del-
phine, would like to see Open
Minds — Open Arms expand-
ed to include interactive pro-
grams for the students'
parents. "It's easy to teach
the children," she said, "but
the question arises: Why can't
we teach each other?" El
