Also in the exhibit are toys made in the concentration camps, a uniform from the camps, photographs donated by Atlanta survivors, and a Torah from the Nazis' collec- tion for what was to be its Museum of the Extinct Race in Prague. The collection eventually landed in West- minster, England, and a local family purchased the Torah for the Center. This exhibit, so full of per- sonal and poignant memen- tos, will become part of the Jewish Heritage Center to be opened in Atlanta in 1994. Next stop: Congregation Or VeShalom at 1681 North Druid Hills Road, N.E., the ci- ty's only Spanish Sephardic synagogue. (Also in Atlanta, there's an Iranian Sephardic congregation, evidence of the city's diverse Jewish population.) Inside, visitors first notice the unusual stained glass sculpture mounted on brass, representing an artist's vision of the synagogue's name, "light and peace." In the sanctuary, which seats 240, there are 12 stain- ed glass windows in brilliant hues depicting the 12 tribes of Israel, and two 15-foot win- dows showing a tree of life and burning bush. Executive director Martin Karon explains that the win- dows were designed by Sol Beton, a prominent Atlanta L artist and member of the con- gregation. The front wall of the sanctuary is all of stone, representing the Western Wall in Jerusalem, with the ark recessed into the stone. The congregation now num- bers 400 members and is led by Rabbi S. Robert Ishay from Tunisia. Ahavath Achim, known as A.A., is Atlanta's largest Jewish congregation. It is headquartered at 600 Peach- tree Battle Avenue, N.W. Built in 1950, its massive sanc- tuary seats 2,524 worship- pers, and several artists con- tributed to its design. Finally, after seeing Atlan- ta's varied synagogues and its Holocaust Resource Center, hungry travelers may want to stop at Arthur's Deli at Briar- cliff and LaVista. Here they'll be able to in- dulge in hefty corned beef, pastrami and roast beef sand- wiches, burgers, fried chicken, pepper steak and meat loaf — all fully kosher — plus 700 kosher items to take out in a separate take-out department. Arthur's cooking is one more evidence that the flavor of this Georgia capital is both cosmopolitan and Jewish.
