; Fisher Receives
Shazar Prize

Jerusalem (JTA) — An
American Jewish leader and
four Jewish educational in-
stitutions around the world
° were named recipients of the
1992 Shazar Prize, to be pre-
sented here next week in
ceremonies at the presiden-
tial residence.
--- The award is made annu-
ally by the World Zionist
Organization's Department
of Education and Culture in
the Diaspora in recognition
of excellence in the fields of
Jewish and Zionist edu-
cation.
The prize is named for the
• late Zalman Shazar, Israel's
third president.
Max Fisher of Detroit, one

of U.S. Jewry's veteran
leaders, is the only in-
dividual being honored this
year. He was a founder of the
A.L. Pincus Education Fund
in the Diaspora and is its di-
rector.
The fund has allocated
more than $30 million to
date for 300 projects in over
40 countries. It has been
particularly active recently
in encouraging the develop-
ment of Jewish education in
the countries of the former
Soviet Union.
The Moria School in Paris,
established in 1952 to serve
children from deprived socio-
economic backgrounds, is
another recipient. It com-
bines Hebrew and Jewish
studies, art and other
creative courses.
Another recipient is the
Centre for Jewish Education
in London, run jointly by the
Reform and Liberal
movements, which in the
last eight years has become
a model of Jewish-Zionist
education.
The Shazar Prize is also
going to the Weizmann Heb-
rew Day School, run by ORT
in Santiago, Chile, which
was established in 1925 and
has operated the school
without interruption since
1936.
It serves a community of
15,000 Jews and has an
enrollment of 1,600 from
kindergarten through
teachers-training seminary
levels. Hundreds of its
graduates live in Israel and
some have fallen in defense
of the country.
The Board of Jewish Edu-
cation of Greater Los
Angeles will also be
honored. Founded in 1937, it
embraces 160 schools with
27,000 pupils and about
2,000 teachers. The board is
associated with the Reform,
Conservative and Orthodox
branches of Judaism.
