said. "I believe the majority of
Americans now feel more confi-
'' -dent."
If exit polls are correct, the left-
wing bloc led by Labor would
have 64 seats in the new Knes-
set, against 56 seats for the
Likud-led bloc of right-wing and
religious parties.
- However, the Left's 64 would
include two Arab parties on the
far left, which won four seats be-
tween them.
Without the Arabs, Labor and
the allied Meretz bloc would be
one vote short of a Knesset ma-
ority. Meretz was projected to
have won 13 seats, making it the
largest of the smaller parties.
Gary Beydoun, a board mem-
ber of the Detroit chapter of the
American-Arab Anti-Discrimi-
nation Committee (ADC), wel-
,zomes Mr. Rabin with "open
arms."
'e think the Labor Party will
move toward a peace settlement
once and for all," said Mr. Bey-
doun of Dearborn. "We want to

work from this point forward.
Everybody wants peace."
Osama Siblani, publisher and
editor of the {Arab American
News}, doesn't think it makes
a difference who is in charge.
`The Israelis have decided who
they want to represent them,"
-Mr. Siblani said "and the Arab
world will have to deal with it."
Mr. Siblani said Israel's elec-
tion can only make a difference
if the agenda is peace.
"It doesn't matter who's at the
,
helm as long as occupation con-
Ainues and settlements increase,"
he said.
Albert Mokhiber, president of
, ADC, is hopeful left-wing ele-
ments of a Labor-led government
will have significant input.
But Mr. Mokhiber is cautious
,,when it comes to Mr. Rabin.
"I don't forget he was the per-
son who seized the territories
— and came up with the break the
bones of the Arabs policy," Mr.
Mokhiber said.
Mr. Rabin achieved interim-
, tional censure at the outbreak of
the intifada in 1987 when as de-
fense minister, he called on sol-
diers to "break the bones" of
perpetrators of violence.
"We're not talking about an ul-
tra-liberal dove," he said.
Mrs. Laks, who "voted" for
Meretz, the left-wing bloc led by
Shulamit Aloni, hopes Labor
goes with her party.
'e believe settlements must
be frozen and funds channelled
to other areas of society to bring
about peace with Arabs and to
