PLO Disrupts
› Official's Talk

Sydney, Australia (JTA) —
A Palestinian disrupted a
--meeting addressed by a Jew-
ish official at the Australian
— Press Club last week in what
was apparently part of the
'-' propaganda war being wag-
ed by the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization here to
--,discredit the Australian
Jewish community.
Ali Kazak, the PLO's
Australian representative,
began to shout during a
speech by High Court
Justice Marcus Enfield that
,,officially launched
- Australia's "Refugee
Week."
Mr. Enfield, a member of a
prominent Jewish family in
Sydney, was appealing for
compassionate treatment of
refugees from Burma, Cam-
bodia and other countries.
Mr. Kazak interrupted Mr.
Enfield's remarks by
demanding to know when he
and other Palestinians
would be permitted to go
"back to their homeland."
------' He waved his birth cer-
tificate as he continued to
shout and relented only
when threatened with ejec-
tion.
Mr. Enfield recently at-
tacked the Australian
government for reiterating
its support of U.N. Resolu-
tion 194 of 1948, which
stipulates the right of Pales-
tinian refugees to return to
their homes in Israel.
Earlier last week, Mr.
Kazak circulated a press
release to the media calling
attention to Australian
Jewry's criticism of Foreign
Minister Gareth Evans, who
recently toured the Middle
East.
According to the PLO, the
Jews were threatening the
government with loss of
electoral and financial sup-
port because of its decision
last month to reinstate high
level contacts with the PLO.
Australia had been boycot-
ting the PLO because of its
support of Saddam Hussein
during the Persian Gulf
War.
Mark Leibler, president of
the Zionist Federation of
Australia, insisted his
organization acted on prin-
ciple and never tried to in-
fl uence the attitude
"members of the Jewish
community might or might
not adopt at an election."
But Leslie Caplan, presi-
dent of the Executive Coun-
, cil of Australian Jewry, ad-
mitted that Evans' perfor-
mance "would most likely
affect" Jewish votes.
