SOME LIKE IT ON SUNDAY TOO • 0 Mesa Arts Mounts Exhibit Mesa Arts will present the art of Alice Warder Seely through June 30. Alice Warder Seely creates a fantasy world of detailed, L-) painted clay sculptures in- spired by Navajo legends. The whimsical clay sculptures of , coyotes and other South- western folk figures are painted in a boldly primitive style. Her style is reminiscent f..vf Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, and her stepfather, the Navajo painter Ha-So-De, founder of contemporary In- - dian art. Ms. Seely refers to her sculptures as "urban f etishes" or little figures that are supposed to have magical powers. They are made of hand-built, low-fired clay and brightly painted with clay stain. They are creatures with human likenesses or with human bodies and animal heads. Ms. Seely also calls them "Yuppie totems." They bring out the light side of art. One creation, an urban storyteller, a lighthearted takeoff on Indian storyteller creations, is painted with red and gray designs that evoked - the feel of neon lights. Ms.Seely grew up in New Mexico amidst the Navajo culture. Her mother, a potter and weaver, and father, a respected painter and educator, and both grand- ' mothers, as art patrons, in- stilled a love of beauty. - O.K. Harris Exhibits Photos O.K. Harris Works of Art - will mount photography of Alfred Stieglitz and Camera Works through July 11. Camera Works was an in- dependent American photo- graphic magazine that pro- vided a forum for the discus- - sion and criticism of new work; it acted as a catalyst in the fight to have photography accepted as a medium of ar- tistic expression. Photographers allied with Mr. Stieglitz to promote and 0 develop photography as an art form. O.K. Harris Works of Art will continue the photog- ' raphy emphasis through the ) summer with an exhibition mounted by Detroit's photo- , graphic artist Lisa Spindler, Aug. 1-22; followed by British -.0 photographer Daffyd Jones, Aug. 29-Sept. 26. O.K. Harris Works of Art is at 430 N. Woodward Ave., Bir - mingham. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and by appointment.
