"I had decided to follow my
heart, and the pleasant
irony is that I found a much
more stable profession and a
better income than I ever
thought possible."
"Besides," he said, "I get
to keep all the money. The
partners don't get anything."
anything."
Mr. Geffner's first puppet,
Shmendrik, whom he de-
scribed as "naive and gull-
ible," was soon joined by
Chippy, "the shy monkey
who brings out the motherly
instinct in everybody"; Yosi,
the "brash and aggressive,
but very charming young
Israeli"; Ezra, "the blond-
haired country boy who is
whimsical, optimistic and
trusting"; and Aunt Sarah,
"who was inspired by my
own aunt. She is cranky and
forgetful but also lovable, of
course."
Some might call their per-
formances wooden, but his
puppets are anything but
ordinary to Mr. Geffner.
"I've gone puppet crazy,"
he admitted. A collector, he
has numerous puppets that
sit around his apartment —
some in public, some in suit-
cases ready to travel.
Thirty-eight and single,
Mr. Geffner said he draws
the line, however, at making
the puppets "speak" to his
dates.
"I'm not going to test
people's limits," he said. "I
don't want anyone calling to
have me taken away in a
straitjacket at the end of the
evening." ❑

Shaarey Zedek Productions
will present in June a pro-
gram in two parts. The first is
an in-depth interview with
graduates of the Shaarey
Zedek Religious School, three
young men who have diver-
sified backgrounds and talk
about their Jewish values,
their past at Shaarey Zedek
and their future plans.
Also interviewed is Linda
R. Benson, a Shaarey Zedek
graduate, who is a published
author.
The second part of the pro-
gram will recognize the
celebration this month of the
25th anniversary of the
reunification of the capital ci-
ty of Israel, Jerusalem, with
songs, pictures and a voice
overview.
Following is the schedule of
the program on cable sta-
tions. All programs can be
checked out of the Shaarey
Zedek library.
