JET Is Looking For A 10-Year-Old SUZANNE CHESSLER Special to The Jewish News T he Jewish Ensemble Theatre (JET) is look- ing for a talented 10-year-old boy to take on a major role in its fall produc- tion of Today I Am a Fountain Pen by Israel Horovitz. The professional group of players has set a June 30 deadline for interested young people to sign up to audition. "Formal rehearsals will begin Sept. 21, but I want ex- tra time to do some coaching," said Evelyn Orbach, artistic director of Michigan's only Jewish professional acting company. Ms. Orbach will direct this first presentation of the 1992-93 season. The play is a family comedy set in Sault Ste. Marie in the early 1940s. Part of a triolgy that includes last season's A Rosen By Any Other Name, the production shows the boy going through various stages of maturity. Because the group is profes- sional, the selected young ac- tor will be paid for his work- ing time. . Bloomfield theater training, will be in three segments. First, there will be a meeting with Ms. Orbach, who will take the boy through acting exercises and readings. Second, there will be a performance of a designated scene. Third, there will be a session during which all cast finalists will read scenes and improvise together. "This is only worth doing if both the children and their parents really want to do it," Ms. Orbach said. The selected actor will have to be prepared to be in 20 performances, with rehearsals scheduled five hours a day, six days a week. The three other plays set for next season are The Queen's Physician by Betty Neustat, a fictional account of a romance between the queen of Spain and her Jewish doctor; Grownups by Jules Pfeiffer, a contemporary family comedy; and The Square Root of Three by Michael Golder, a surprise comedy. Stephen Prutsman The Julius Chajes Music Fund Concert Series will pre- sent pianist Stephen Prutsman in recital 3 p.m. June 28 at the Maple-Drake Jewish Community Center. This final concert will take place in the Janice Charach Epstein Museum/Gallery. Mr. Prutsman was a medalist at the lbhaikovsky International Piano Competi- tion and in 1991 he was awarded the Avery. Fisher Career Grant. Later that same year he was awarflext the Second Prize Gold Medal at the Queen Elizabeth Inter- national Piano Competition in Belgium. A native of Los Angeles, Mr. Prutsman has attended the University of California and the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, studying with Aube Tzerko and Leon Fleisher. As chamber artist, he has participated in the Tanglewood, Marlboro and Newport festivals. He has directed music festivals in Texas and Ostende, Belgium.
