Joan Schafer
•Gets Riegle Award

Jewish activist Joan
Hallem-Schafer was one of
three members of the Flint
community to receive the
third annual Donald Riegle
community service award.
At a 400-person dinner on
Sunday, Ms. Hallem-Schafer
and UAW Greater Flint
Community Action Council
President Dan Sain and the
Rev. Avery Aldridge of the
Foss Avenue Baptist Church
accepted their awards.

sponsored by the
Flint Jewish
L_ Federation, was
1 — established in
L-, 1990 to recognize
individuals of the
Greater Flint area.

Ms. Hallem-Schafer, who
has been visually impaired
since she was a young girl,
has been a dedicated ad-
vocate and leader for the
handicapped in Flint. She
also is co-chairman of the
1992 FederationJUJA Wo-
men's Division Campaign.
She served as president for
what is today the Visually
Impaired Center and as the
first Russian Resettlement
coordinator for the Flint
Jewish Federation in the
mid-1970s.
The award, sponsored by
the Flint Jewish Federation,
was established in 1990 to
recognize individuals of the
Greater Flint area who have
displayed exceptional com-
mitment in the community
service area.
Proceeds from the dinner
are used to help resettle
Soviet Jews in the Flint
community.
At the dinner, Sen. Riegle
spoke about Soviet Jewish
immigration and anti-
Semitism in Russia, racism
in the United States and the
U.S. economy. ❑
