Tanter Courts
Jewish Community

In the race for the newly
drawn 13th Congressional
District, (which spans
western Wayne County to
Ann Arbor), University of
Michigan political science
professor Raymond Tanter, a
Republican, has his sights
on the Detroit Jewish com-
munity.
A former staff member of
the National Security Coun-
cil during Ronald Reagan's
presidency, Dr. Tanter hopes
his unyielding support of
Israel will help boost his
campaign war chest.
Already, Dr. Tanter has
held a few fund-raisers
within the Detroit Jewish
community.
Dr. Tanter is familiar to
the community. He speaks
regularly about Israel and
the Middle East for Jewish
groups, including Jewish
Federation, National Coun-
cil of Jewish Women and the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary.

Senate Passes
Resolution

Michigan's two senators,
Carl Levin and Donald
Riegle, both Democrats,
were co-sponsors of last
week's Senate resolution
calling on President George
Bush and Secretary of State
James Baker to celebrate
the reunification of
Jerusalem.
The resolution, drafted by
Sen. Daniel Moynihan,
D-N.Y., and Bob Packwood,
R-Ore., calls on the ad-
ministration to "embrace
the principals of this resolu-
tion: to celebrate the
reunification of Jerusalem
and to pledge that it will
never again be divided."
The resolution also calls
for an unequivocal state-
ment of support for the prin-
cipal of Jerusalem remain-
ing "an undivided city in
which the religious rights of
every ethnic and religious
group are protected as they
have been by Israel during
the past 25 years."
