The June issue of Corn-
mentary, the monthly opi-
nion journal which the 1992
Media Guide calls "erudite
and invigorating," has a
clearly reasoned dissection
of the reasons for the anti-
Israel "smears" which come
from the Bush Administra-
tion and which many jour-
nalists are reportedly eager
to print.

David Bar-Illan, editorial
page editor of the Jerusalem
Post, claims that "what has
transformed [these leaks]
from irksome nuisances to
major menaces is the hostile
atmosphere which has been
created by the Bush White
House. A mood of open sea-
son on Israel makes them
bolder, and encourages the

media to gobble up their
stories indiscriminately, no
matter how ludicrous" they
maybe.
Motivating these leaks, he
writes, "is a fear of Israeli
competition in a shrinking
arms market." Moreover, he
charges that with "the
demise of the Soviet empire,
the U.S. has become by far
the biggest supplier of
weaponry to the Arab coun-
tries:" 75 percent of advanc-
ed weaponry now deployed
by Arab armies is American.
The combination of an an-
ti-Israel White House and a
strongly armed Arab
military, concludes Mr. Bar-
Illan, has eroded Arab
"certainty" that the U.S.
would come to Israel's rescue
if they attacked it.

Four In Columbia
Made A Difference

Columbia, the "New
Town" roughly half-way
between Baltimore and
Washington, is celebrating
its 25th year, and most of the
summer issue of Columbia
magazine is devoted to the
event. Among its articles are
"Twenty-five Who Made A
Difference" — residents who
"represent the character and
spirit — the very ethos of the
city."
The 25 include four Jews:

• Zeke Orlinsky, whose
weekly newspaper, the
Columbia Flier, was the
flagship of the prolific
Patuxent Publishing Co.
(The article does not men-
tion that Mr. Orlinsky owns
Columbia magazine.
• Rabbi Martin Siegel,
who arrived in Columbia in
1972 to help create the in-
novative Columbia Jewish
Congregation.
