how I learned teamwork,"
she said. "What I learned
was how to work with the di-

actors, and how to make my
part of it work with everyone
else's toward a common goal.
Jewish communal work is
really the same thing."
Ms. Robinson said she
plans to spend most of the

time at her new job, at least
initially, listening to the
needs of the congregants.
"That will be the biggest
part of my job — finding the

both of her parents, Jay and

of her brothers, Aaron and

JFS To Start Group
For Sexually Abused Men

s- AMY J. MEHLER

Staff Writer

ewish Family Service
of Metropolitan
Detroit is trying again
lo organize a treatment
group for men who were
I sexually abused as children.
"We know the need is out
there, but it takes time for
omen to feel safe enough to
come to us for help," said
431issa Driker, a social
worker at JFS.
A group for sexually abus-
ed men was attempted last
1 ( summer, but Ms. Driker and
t, Perry Ohren, the group's co-
ordinators, got no response.
JFS needs at least five
men to meet weekly for 15
essions to start a group,
which would be a component
of the Family Violence
Prevention Program. So far,
Mr. Ohren and Ms. Driker
have interviewed four possi-
ble members, none Jewish.
0 "Statistics show that one
in six men survives sexual
abuse by the time he is 18,"
Mr. Ohren said. "We can't
think it doesn't exist in the
Jewish community."
Any man who was sexual-
ly abused as a child is eli-

j

gible, Ms. Driker said.
Potential members will be
interviewed to determine
whether they are ap-
propriate for the group.
"Many men believe if they
let someone sexually abuse
them as little boys, there
must have been something
wrong with their masculini-
ty," said Mr. Ohren, a social
worker at JFS. "They begin
to think something is wrong
with them. They ask them-
selves, 'Why did they decide
to sexually abuse me?' "
"Women have broken
through most of the taboos
associated with rape and in-
cest," Ms. Driker added.
"We've been socialized to
ask for help, to bond with
other people. Men aren't
always able to do that."
Men tend to internalize
their sense of shame, Mr.
Ohren said.
"Men are raised to protect,
not to need protection," he
said. "They're not socialized
to connect with their feel-
ings or show emotions that
could be taken as a sign of
weakness."
For information, call
Elissa Driker or Perry
Ohren at 559-1500. ❑

Full-Time Replacement

ALAN HITSKY

Associate Editor

T

he board of the Metro
Detroit Hillel Founda-
tion has voted to seek
a full-time replacement for
'Rabbi Louis Finkelman, who
recently announced his res-
ignation.
Its entire program was
under review after Metro
Hillel lost $40,000 in fun-
ding from the International
'Hillel Foundation, which is
making nationwide budget
cuts. The local cuts repre-

sent nearly 25 percent of
Metro Hillel's budget. Metro
Hillel serves Wayne State
University, Oakland Uni-
versity, Oakland Commun-
ity College and Lawrence
Technological University.
Kurt Singer, president of
Metro Hillel, said the board
followed the recommenda-
tion of its steering com-
mittee in deciding to seek a
full-time replacement for
Rabbi Finkelman, who had
served as director for 13
years.
He said fund-raising
efforts are in progress to con-
