rious about seeing the
negotiations through to a
settlement," reasons Sami
Ayyub, another East
Jerusalemite.
But if most Palestinians
have little interest or faith
in the workings of Israel's
democracy, local leaders and
activists — themselves polit-
ical animals — have been
following the campaign
closely, listening for hints
and signals, permuting the
possibilities of a new coali-
tion, even offering predic-
tions on how many votes
each bloc will receive.
"The average Palestinian
doesn't even differentiate
between the left and the
right in Israel," explained
Ziad Abu Zayyad, publisher
and editor of Gesher, the
only Palestinian publication
in Hebrew, as he stood
beside the burnt-out car of
one of his Israeli employees.
(it was the sixth Israeli car
to be torched in Jerusalem
that morning). "But of
course there are differences,
and of course it matters how
the election turns out."
That is, it matters at least
▪ in the short run — and this
is a point on which there
seems to be a consensus
among the activists in the
nationalist (PLO), as oppos-
ed to fundamentalist
(llamas), camp. Any Labor-
led coalition, be it with the
Left or with the Likud, is
bound to be more flexible
than the present Likud
government.
Yitzhak Rabin has not
only pledged to institute Pa-
lestinian autonomy in the
occupied territories within
the coming months, but has
spoken of a freeze on
"political settlements" and
is committed to a "territorial
compromise?'
Some of these positions are
admittedly vague and may
D
not qualify him for honorary
membership in Peace Now.
But they make up in spirit
for what they lack in letter
and certainly convey a diff-
erent intent than the
Likud's rigid position on the
territories. At the very least,
they could mitigate the
mood on both sides of the
Green Line by easing the
atmosphere of the all-but-
fruitless peace talks.
There are, of course, also
distinct disadvantages to a
Rabin-led government, from
the Palestinian perspective.
"He speaks of a territorial
compromise, but when push
comes to shove he'll be under
enormous pressure from the
• Right and try to hold on to as
much of the West Bank as
possible," predicted Abu
Zayyad.
