Dr. Forman focuses on
treatment: What the physi-
? cian advises, what the pa-
tient wants, what can most
realistically fight the
disease and offer the least
painful side effects.
He also focuses on the pa-
''tient-physician relationship,
which he described as "a sort
[ of arranged marriage."
How to speak with pa-
tients is an ongoing concern
for Dr. Forman, who laments
the fact that this topic is
"completely avoided by
medical schools."
;Th
"I recognize their situation
when they're with me," he
says. "They are powerless,
defenseless, completely
helpless." Not only are they
-battling a difficult disease,
about which patients often
know only the basics, but
L, they must lie half-clothed in
front of physicians, nurses
and residents.
Dr. Forman says his first
Job is to listen. Anything
• might be a sign. "Every
' i interaction has life-or-death
• consequences," he says. "So
when I'm in the room with a
patient, nothing else in the
world is as important as
what he has to say."
When he finally leaves the
some time late in the
-, evening, Dr. Forman is still
r- thinking about Lydia and
Mr. B. and Ed, who has the
• brain tumor.
j Ed has a 1-2 percent
1 chance of surviving for any
(-length of time, Dr. Forman
says. The chance that he'll
' be cured: zero.
Ed knows the truth be-
-cause his doctor has told
him. The old days of "keep
everything from the pa-
_jient" are long gone.
"Most people need to know
the truth," Dr. Forman says.
"And I'm not going to lie to
= anyone and say, 'You'll be
fine' when he's not. That's
an enormous injustice." But
that doesn't make the truth
any easier.
"When bad things happen
to my patients, it's very
painful," Dr. Forman says.
"I worry about them all the
time."
What does keep this doctor
— who admits he has a hard
time taking vacations be-
cause it separates him from
'2) his patients — going is the
knowledge that many
cancers today can be
eradicated.
"Patients become attached
to me and I to them," he
(, says. "After treatment,
they'll come back to see me
when they're healthy. And
that is something I just
love." ❑
