Several years ago,
America rediscovered Mr.
Mason, and his one-man
show of observations on
everyday life became a huge
success on Broadway. "I felt
relieved and comfortable,"
he says, "like winning the
race I had been running for
20 years. I still have the
same drive but I don't feel I
have to prove myself
anymore."
Although his network
television series, "Chicken
Soup," bombed, Mr. Mason
just launched another
syndicated program. But
this is a town meeting
forum, with Mr. Mason
discussing current events
with a studio audience,
rather than the sitcom for-
mula that he hated. "I don't
want to sound like a sore
loser," he says, "but I found
the experience sickening
and repulsive, meaningless,
trivial, repetitive and bor-
ing. I felt like I was in prison
and I hated every second of
it."
The new show, which pre-
miered last Monday on WOR-
TV (carried locally by Metro-
vision), puts Mr. Mason in
front of a live audience.
"That's where I'm happiest,"
he says, "bathing in applause.

Bernardine and Morton
Stein inherited the works of
Joseph Zitka upon his death
at the age of 41 in 1971.
Although his family
discouraged him from pursu-
ing a career in art because
they thought it would be dif-
ficult to earn a living in that
field, he took courses at what
is presently the Center for
Creative Studies. Between
the ages of 34 and 41, he ac-
complished the equivalent of
a life's work. His love of art
drove him to complete 40
paintings in various media
and over 1,000 sketches.
A native Detroiter of Polish
ancestry, he became a phar-
macologist and then took a
position as a research chemist
with the Burroughs Corpora-
tion, but art was always his
first love.
