Lester doesn't think they
should be left out in the cold
and off the golf course.
In fact, he'd like to see many
other youngsters join the
squad and reap the benefits of
being a part of the Maccabi
program.
"I'd like to issue an open in-
vitation to any young Jewish
man or woman who is in-
terested regardless of their
age, skill level or ambitions to
join our team," said Lester,
27, an attorney.
"In Maccabi golf, there's a
goal beyond becoming a bet-
ter golfer," he said. "We want
to give youngsters the ex-
perience of meeting other
Jewish kids and gaining a
sense of community pride.
"There are big plans for
Maccabi golf here. We're
working on sponsoring an in-
vitational tournament later
this year which would raise
money for the entire Detroit
Maccabi program."
For now, the nine members
of what Lester calls his
"travel team" need to get
ready for the 45 holes they'll
play in Baltimore.

scheduled at Tam O'Shanter,
where most of the workouts
were held last summer in
Lester's first year as coach.
It's hoped that ar-
rangements can be made so
the players also will get a
chance to tee up at Knoliwood
Country Club and Franklin
Hills Country Club.
"The people at Tam
O'Shanter deserve kudos for
really opening their arms to
us this year," Lester said.
Henry Spiro, a leading spon-
sor of Detroit Maccabi golf, is
a member at Tam O'Shanter.

Woods and Stewart Schwartz
of West Bloomfield will com-
pete in the 13-14 age group in
Baltimore.
Joining them in the 15-16
bracket will be Eric Bershad,
Justin Cohen and John
Granden from Bloomfield
Hills Andover and David Paul
and Marc Feldman from West
Bloomfield High School.
In last year's regional Mac-
cabi Games in New Jersey,
Craig Colton of Andover plac-
ed third out of 40 golfers in
the 15-16 group.
