BATYA BERLIN •
Special to The Jewish. News
When a man or woman
commits any wrong toward a
fellow man, thus breaking
faith with the Lord, and that
person realizes his guilt, he
shall confess the wrong that he
has done .. .
Numbers 5:6-7.
T
hese verses place a
large burden on each
of us who have wrong-
ed another; this means, of
course, all of us. No one who
lives is innocent of causing
pain to another, inadvertent-
ly or purposely. For most of us
the heartfelt expression of
regret, "I'm sorry," is difficult
to say. Our promise not to
repeat the wrong is difficult
to voice.
Why should this be so? Con-
trition implies regret. It re-
quires a diminution of our
selves; it requires humility. It
requires a careful look at our
weaknesses and failures. It
requires that we experience a
modicum of shame for our
behavior and a commitment
to learn from it and to behave
differently. This is the right
thing to do because God re-
quires it of us. This is a
challenging obligation.
None of this can take place
in a vacuum. When we "com-
mit any wrongdoing toward a
fellow man, thus breaking
faith with the Lord . . . that
person shall confess the
wrong he has done . . ."
We need to confess, to
apologize directly for our
wrongdoing to the person
whom we have injured. We
cannot make amends by
thinking about it. We cannot
right a wrong by silence.
Breaking faith with the
Lord by injuring a fellow man
means fixing it with that
person.
We begin making changes
when we can speak of our
wish to act differently direct-
ly, clearly, to the aggrieved
party. That is the strengthen-
ing act that begins to make it
right with our fellow man and
with God.
That the confession is
obligatory for all of us has
been explained in this
paragraph from the Sefer
Ha-Hinukh:
The verbal confession of
guilt provides an indica-
tion that the sinner truly
believes that all his deeds

are revealed and known to
the Lord blessed is He and
he will not deny the om-
nipresence of the All-
seeing. Again, by verbally
specifying the sin and
regretting it, he will be
more careful in the future
not to stumble thereon.
After he has said with his
mouth: I did such and such
a thing and was foolish in
my actions, he will, as a
result, become reconciled
with his Maker, the good
God who desires the wel-
fare of His creatures and

guided them in this path
through which they would
gain merit.
One remarkable and un-
mistakable fact about these
verses from Numbers is that
nowhere is it implied that
confession is an obligation on-
ly for Yom Kippur. Rather,
since wrongdoing is constant-
ly with us, so self-
examination, recognition of
our wrong doings, confession,
repentance and a commit-
ment to not repeating our
wrongdoings are constant
tasks.
