'Days Of Decision Lifts
~Campaign To $26 Million

' PHIL JACOBS
Managing Editor

ast year, after the
Allied Jewish Cam-
paign fell $900,000
short of its $26 million goal,
o- it became apparent to Fed-
eration that a change had to
• occur in the way the Cam-
paign closed.
Under the old system, the
- Federation was unable to ac-
curately tell its agencies
0 , how much money they could
expect. Millions of dollars in
.late pledges typically were
made even after the Cam-
- paign was closed for the

year.
This year, the Federation's
Allied Jewish Campaign
closed itself from. May 31
through June 5. It was dur-
ing this window of time that
an entire mobilization event
reached out and raised $1.6
•million and added 400 new
donors to the Camp[aign.
° When all the phone calls
were completed, the Federa-
tion had reached last year's
• _goal of $26 million.
It did so by turning the
op, Max Fisher Building into
"Campaign Central," a
"lace where volunteers as
well as constituent agency
► employees could come to
make phone calls.
"This was a great high for
us," said Campaign Director
Allan Gelfond. "It was the
,kind of week that I don't
think we ever experienced
► before. You talk about the
best-laid plans that
• sometimes don't unfurl, but
this one started each day at
7:45 a.m. and moved on with
great success."
Mr. Gelfond called it one of
the longest phone-a-thons on
record. He credited syn-
▪ agogue members, day school
boards of directors, youth
o' group members, senior
citizens and others with
'keeping the phones busy
, sometimes until 10 p.m.
On the other end of the
line, people were respon-
ding, according to Mr. Gel-
fond. There was a commun-
ity sense of urgency, he said.
" At least one new contributor
pledged $2,500. Another,
who had stopped con-
tributing several years ago
due to business difficulties,
0 , also made a substantial
pledge.
Constituent agencies lim-
ited meetings so their people
' could participate in the
effort. Arnold Budin, ex-
ecutive director of the Jew-
ish Home for Aged, and his

executive staff promised to
wash cars of those who
pledged a minimum of $10.
JHA contributors were also
entered into a raffle with one
of the winners to receive a
picnic lunch for six prepared
by Mr. Budin.
Mr. Gelfond admitted he
was "shaky" going into the
effort because nothing like
this had been done before.
"I wasn't sure if we could
pull it off," he said, "but you
could see it building. For the
first time out of the box, I'd
have to say this was an
overwhelming success. We
were able to reach a
marvelous achievement. The
people responded to us. For
the Jewish community, it
was a home run!'
Federation leaders met
Wednesday to lay out the
allocations process for the
completed Campaign. ❑
