2) The second step would
be identifying possible
areas of common interest
that can be worked on at
the local level. It is in the
self-interest of white and
Jewish Americans that the
cities be clean and safe. It
is in the self-interest of
white and Jewish Ameri-
cans that drug use be
reduced. It is in the self-
interest of white and
Jewish Americans that all
citizens be literate.
It cannot be done in a
year, a decade or even a
generation. But unless the
kind of activity I am sug-
gesting is begun, the
nihilism swallowing ever-
larger portions of black
America will eventually
swallow us all.

Herzl Shur,
Noted Poet
Herzl Shur, who died May
25 at age 87, was given the
Herzl name by devoted early
Herzlian Zionist parents.
This became their son's
leagcy which he incor-
porated in poetry expressing
his Zionism and loyalty to
Israel toeard the end of his
life.
Herzl Shur's skill was in
his knowledge of Hebrew
and Yiddish which he used
as an educator with his Eng-
lish text to keep glorifying
his love for Erertz Israel and
with constant emphasis on
jeruslaem.
• Our community must,
therefore, remember himn
with pride as a Zionist lin-
guist who expressed his
devotion to his ideals tri-
lingually.

Israel Welcomes
Italian Leader

Rome (JTA) — Israeli
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir has sent a warm
message of congratulations
to Oscar Luigi Scalfaro on
his election as Italy's new
president.
Israel is, indeed, pleased.
A source at the Israeli Em-
bassy here pointed out that
Mr. Scalfaro, a veteran
Christian Democrat, was the
first president of the friend-
ship association established
between the Israeli and
Italian parliaments last year
right after the Persian Gulf
War.
"This is a very important
fact for us," the source said,
observing that the initiative
for the association was laun-
ched by Mr. Scalfaro before
the Gulf War and was not
simply a result of it.
As president of the associ-
ation, Mr. Scalfaro visited
Israel in January and met
Mr. Shamir.
The new Italian chief of
state is a devout Catholic
and devoted to the cult of
Mary. But apparently he is
strongly tolerant of those
who do not share his faith.
In his inaugural address,
Mr. Scalfaro stressed that
freedom of conscience is one
of the basic tenets of democ-
racy and that he respects all
religions and beliefs.
