runs for one of two open posi-
tions on the U-M Board of
Regents in November.
Mr. Deitch and other
members of the Deitch fami-
ly received their under-
graduate and law degrees
from U-M.
This race marks Mr. Deit-
ch's first bid for elected polit-
ical office, but he is active in
other areas of the commun-
ity.
He is treasurer for the
Michigan Democratic Party,
president of Temple Beth El,
a member of the Michigan
Civil Service Commission
and a board member of the
Greater Detroit Interfaith
Roundtable of Christians,
Jews and Muslims.

"It is important for the
Jewish community to have a
visible Jewish activist at
U-M," Mr. Deitch says. No
Jews have served on the
eight-member board of
regents since Bob
Nederlander left his position
in 1984.
"U-M had great meaning
in my life, and I believe in
citizen participation in the
community," Mr. Deitch
says. "I think the university

Former Detroiter
Runs For Congress

Dr. Morry Waksberg hopes
his Jewish name will help
give him a little recognition
in his bid for a newly drawn
congressional district in
California.
A Republican, the former
Detroiter is running for
Congress in an area once
represented by Henry Wax-
man, a Democrat, whose Los
Angeles district was moved
further west in congres-
sional redistricting.
The area comprises
Koreatown, which was af-
fected greatly by the recent
riots following the Rodney
King verdict.
Dr. Waksberg, 45, an oph-
thalmologist, is a graduate
of Michigan State Univer-
sity. He did his medical
training at the Albert Eins-
tein College of Medicine and
Harvard University. He has
a private practice and is an
associate clinical professor
at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye
Institute.
He is a member of the
Republican National Com-
mittee Eagles, a Republican-
sponsored committee of doc-
tors throughout the country
whose members are charged
