At the Jewish Home for Aged, that
special ingredient is our Jewish
tradition. It's what sets Friday
evenings aglow with the warmth of
Shabbat candles, softly spoken
blessings, fresh baked challah, and
steaming bowls of kosher chicken
soup shared among old friends.

delivery of education taking
place at the congregational
level with strong support for
instruction and innovation
from the AJE.
"The flash point is the kids
and the teachers in the —
classroom," he said, and he
supports innovative teacher
training and the use of corn-,
puters and video cameras
"to make the Jewish
classroom more exciting."
He also envisions more in-
formal Jewish educational
settings, including family
camp weekends.
To accomplish these goals'
in San Francisco, Mr.
Gelberd helped bring in
$500,000-$800,000 each year
in outside grants to the BJE.
He says San Francisco has
the highest number of teens
visiting Israel, per capita, of''
any city in the United
States, including 200 this fl
summer on a BJE-sponsored
trip.
"I want to meet with the
rabbis and educators in
Detroit and do a lot of listen-
ing," Mr. Gelberd said. "But
the AJE can be the force
behind the innovations."
