Detroit area physicians and nurses are invited to the
about running a month ago.
"I was tempted to run, and
j had a lot of support in the
city, but I am already so
busy I didn't see how I could
take on the school board,"
Mrs. Gordon said.
Mrs. Robinson, a member
(if the Southfield Strategic
'r Planning Committee work-
ing on the future of
Southfield schools, has been
a member of the school board
for 16 years.
Both Mrs. Robinson and
Mr. Fracassi, on the board
four years, resigned so they
could spend more time with
their families. This is the
first time in 30 years that
r two incumbents are retiring
at the same time.
In Oak Park, four can-
didates have joined the race
to fill two four-year terms on
the board of education. In-
' cumbent board members
seeking reelection are

guise Mitchell and Ezra
Roberg. Their challengers
- are Hiram Harris and Bar-
bara Hill.
[ Mr. Roberg, 45, a science
_teacher at -Detroit's Ketter-
ing High School, began his
campaign for reelection in
early May. He said he had
- -to. Election day coincides
with the holiday of Shavuot.
"A significant portion of
Oak Park residents, myself
included, observe Shavuot
R.nd won't be able to cast
ballots June 8," Mr. Roberg
said. "I needed to get the
word out early so people
could arrange ahead of time
to vote absentee ballot."
According to district rules,
no application for absent
voters ballot will be receiv-
_ ed after 2 p.m. June 6.
Mr. Roberg, serving his se-
cond consecutive term as
board president, is most con-
cerned about district fi-
,Aance.
_ "The Oak Park district is
- facing a $3 million deficit,"
Mr. Roberg said. "And Lans-
ing has passed the cost of
employees' FICA (social
security) payments to the
<1. ocal district — at a cost of $1
million." Mr. Roberg, an
--1 0ak Park resident for 25
years, believes cuts, of about
• $3 million, must be whacked
from the district's budget.
"We will look for the pro-
grams least affecting the
students," he said. "For ex-
ample, we recently laid off
several janitors. That has an
affect on the school building,
but doesn't directly affect
the students' curriculum."
Budget concerns are also an
issue in the Berkley School
District where Mark Benner
and David Berg are running
for a seat being vacated by in-
cumbent Patricia Arm-
strong.
A shrinking tax base and
school finance reform concern
Linda Finkel, 48, up for
reelection in the Bloomfield
Hills school district.
"Lower property taxes
take their toll on a district
like ours when you don't
replace it with other revenue
like sales tax," said Mrs.
Finkel, board vice president.
"We have less money com-
ing into the district and
fewer families with children
of school age living in our
area."
Six candidates, including
Mrs. Finkel, are running for
two school board seats in
Bloomfield Hills. They are
Steve Harris, Al Koch,
David Martin, Dr. Prasad
Mummane and Richard Pat-
terson.
Ed Fleischman, who serv-
ed three four-year terms, is
not running for reelection.
Mrs. Finkel, who seeks a
third term as trustee, would
like to see a balanced school
board, "one which repre-
sents the interests of parents
of school age children as well
as the interests of parents
whose children no longer at-
tend district schools," Mrs.
Finkel said.
In West Bloomfield, three
candidates compete for two
school board seats.
Edwin Basile, the incum-
bent, Avery Murav and
Janet McClelland are runn-
ing. School board president
Diane Andreae is not seek-
ing reelection.
And in Farmington Hills,
incumbent Helen Prutow,
Joseph A. Svoke and
Richard I. Devries compete
for two seats.
Two term trustee James J.
Abernathy will not seek
reelection.
Three seats on the board of
trustess for Oakland County
Community College will be
filled. ❑
