mid-60's for two basic reasons.
First, the number of new hous-

below that which it should have
been. Since there is a steady

Laurence N. Smith was
elected president of the
Jewish Federation of
Washtenaw County/United
Jewish Appeal at the annual
meeting May 21.
Smith, who is the vice presi-
dent for university marketing
and student affairs at Eastern
Michigan University, has
served on the Federation
;=-Th board for two years and as the
chair of three fund-raising
campaigns.
Other officials elected were
Carol Smokler, vice president;
Pru Rosenthal, secretary, and
Howard Finkel, treasurer.
Committee chairs elected
were Jerry Lax, allocations;
Phyllis Herzig, planning;
Chuck Newman, community
relations; and Carol Smokier,
campaign.

Mr. Levine serves as ex-
ecutive director of the Aleph
Institute, a non-profit
humanitarian organization
helping Jews in prison or fac-
ing sentencing. Since 1981,
Aleph Institute has sent close
to one-half million religious
items into United States
prisons and jails.
Mr. Levine was formerly a
television morning anchor-
man and investigative
business reporter for south
Florida's Channel 10. In
1984, he was awarded Colum-
bia University's Dupont
Award for excellence in broad-
cast journalism.
