I thought Lag B'Omer would be the perfect day to close the street off and not worry about the traffic." A Southfield city official told Mr. Stebbins he needed block approval to close the street. On Lag B'Omer, the 33rd day of the Omer, Rabbi Akiva's students stopped dy- ing. To celebrate, Jews hold parties, listen to music. On this day, 3-year-old boys tra- ditionally get their first haircut. This was the last Lag B'Omer on Jeanette Street for Adina Forst, 8, whose family makes aliyah this summer. "I'm going to miss my block," said Adina, in sixth grade at Akiva Hebrew Day School. "This is the best Lag B'Omer ever. We never did anything like this before." The Van Dusen Endowment Challenge grant totals $129,260. Of this amount, $92,000 will be awarded if JVS is successful in raising $276,000 in new endowment funds by April 1, 1995. An ad- ditional $37,260 will provide operating support for the JOIN program over the next three years. JOIN is a summer intern- ship program for students who are enrolled on a full- time basis in baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate programs. The program provides stu- dents with a chance to "try out" possible careers in Jewish communal service and to recruit young people to work in community agencies, either as professionals or as volunteers. JVS has established an en- dowment committee led by two members of the board of trustees, John M. Haddow and Michael H. Traison. So far, the committee has raised over 10 percent of the Van Dusen endowment target. Members of the community who are interested in suppor- ting the JVS JOIN program through a contribution to the endowment fund, or anyone who would like more informa- tion about the program, should call Barbara Nurem- berg, 559-5000. =i rl
