Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Israeli-Egyptian peace trea-
ty signed in 1979 opened the
borders of both countries to
tourists. But since then it
has been largely a one-way
movement. Israeli tourists
have thronged to Egypt, but
Egyptian tourists in Israel
have been few and far bet-
ween.
About 18 months ago, ter-
rorists attacked an Israeli
tour bus in Egypt. The
mayor of Beersheba, Yit-
zhak Rager, angrily draped
a cloth over the so-called
Sadat document, signed in
1979, in which the late
Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat and Prime Minister
Menachem Begin vowed
there would be "no more
war."
The mayor vowed not to
remove the covering until
Egyptian tourists arrived.
Thirteen years after the
peace treaty was signed, 33
Egyptian tourists arrived in
Israel as guests of the For-
eign Ministry. They visited
Beersheba on Tuesday and
the mayor finally allowed
the document to be un-
covered.
Lubavitch Shut
Is Vandalized
Rome (JTA) — Police are
investigating the vandalism
last week of the Lubavitch
synagogue in Milan but are
not treating the case as an
anti-Semitic incident.
"The police unit that nor-
mally investigates incidents
of possible religious or polit-
ical intolerance was not even
informed of the affair," ac-
cording to a report in the
daily Corriere della Sera.
According to the news-
paper's account, a member of
the congregation left the
second-floor prayer room at
about 6 p.m., locking the
door behind him.
When he returned a half-
hour later, the reporter said,
"he found before him a
desolate sight."
A glass-covered bulletin
board used for posting an-
nouncements to the con-
gregation was pulled down.
Seats were broken; a
bookshelf was knocked down
and a curtain was torn.
The report said there were
no signs of forced entry. But
a leader of the congregation
disclosed that keys were
usually hidden near the
elevator to the prayer room
and they may have been
used by the vandals.
