Anti-Bias Bill

Rep. Pat Schroeder, D-
;DColo., has introduced
legislation prohibiting dis-
rimination in the military
on the basis of sexual mien-
' tation — and one Jewish
group was at her side when
she announced the measure.
This is not the first time
the Union of American Heb-

ew
taken a stand on bias in the
• military. Last year, UAHC
President Rabbi Alexander
M. Schindler wrote a letter
to President Bush, compar-
ing discrimination against
, gays and lesbians in the
military to discrimination
> against blackss before Pres-
ident Truman integrated the
armed forces.
;-= Apparently the matter was
not high on the administra-
tion's agenda. The official
reply to Rabbi Schindler's
• letter came from an official
in an obscure office of the Of-
fice of Management and
Budget.
At Rep. Schroeder's news
conference was Rabbi Sha-
ron Kleinbaum, the outgo-
ing director of congrega-
• tional affairs for the Re-
- ligious Action Center of
Reform Judaism, a division
of UAHC.
As Jews, we are aware
• that the denial of basic
_ -.human dignity can lead to
derision and violence based
on bigotry," she said. "We
recognize that religious an-
tagonism of homosexuals
has contributed to the accep-
tance of anti-gay bias. Just
as such acts of hate have no
place in communities of
faith, neither may we
tolerate them in the central
institutions of our national
life."

guide to the presidential
candidates in 1992.
The group recently began
distributing its 16-page
pamphlet that gives Presi-
dent George Bush and his
presumed Democratic
challenger, Arkansas Gov.
Bill Clinton, a chance to put
forward their vision for
America, as well as their
views on the Middle East.
But the views of
undeclared candidate Ross
Perot are not included. Since
Perot is still not officially a
candidate, his positions were
not solicited.
