Israel Critic
Faces Challenge

Rep. Mary Rose Oakar, D-
--] Ohio, one of Israel's more
persistent critics in the
House, is facing a challenger
with strong connections to
,-) the Jewish community.
Tim Hagan, a local official
in the Cleveland area, is ex-
pected to give Ms. Oakar a
run for the money in the
June 2 Democratic primary.
Ms. Oakar, an eight-term
incumbent who has long
been associated with Arab-
American causes, has been
hit hard by the congres-
sional check writing scan-
_ dal. Compounding her prob-
> __
' lems are a redrawn district
that cuts out some of her
traditional strengths.
She recently resigned as
co-chair of the platform
committee of the Democratic
party, which is trying to
assemble a platform for this
summer's presidential con-
vention.
Mr. Hagan, on the other
hand, has longstanding ties
to the Jewish community.
In the early 1980s, he co-
- authored a series of op-ed ar-
ticles about the need for the
party to condemn anti-
;-- Semitism. His partner in
this journalistic enterprise
was Rabbi Marvin Hier,
dean of the Simon Wiesen-
thal Center, who is no slouch
when it comes to defending
Jewish interests.
[ At a Washington fund-
:' raiser, Mr. Hagan was
praised by Kathleen Ken-
nedy Townsend — who re-
ferred to Mr. Hagan's clash
with Jesse Jackson over in-
, elusion of language condem-
ning anti-Semitism in an
earlier Democratic platform.
But Ms. Oakar enjoys
strong support from organiz-
ed labor in Ohio, and could
‘r-) still retain her seat.

Kosher Food
For Military

Defense experts and other
groups are still digesting the
lessons of last year's Persian
Gulf War.
One of those lessons in-
, wolves the always sensitive
question of kosher food.
During the war, Agudah
Israel of America, the polit-
ically active Orthodox
group, pressed the army to
develop kosher "meals ready
to eat" —MREs, the suc-
cessor to the K-rations.
Recently, It was reported
in the Washington Post that
the Pentagon had developed
kosher MREs. That came as
o something of a surprise to
Agudah, which had worked
closely with the Pentagon on
the issue.
