man's land that marked a
divided Jerusalem from
1949 to 1967. During all
`:those years, when Jordan oc-
cupied the Old City, Jews
'were refused access to their
holy places, including the
Western Wall. Arabs living
in Israel — both Christians
and Muslims — were denied
''the right to visit their re-
ligious shrines. Jews whose
fclmilies had lived in the Old
City for generations were
billed or expelled. Syn-
agogues were destroyed.
All this came to an end 25
Lyears ago, when King Hus-
l i sein of Jordan —despite
I , -leas from Israel not to join
r .- '
Lthe aggression by Egypt and
Syria —declared war. Israel
I repelled an attack by King
Hussein's troops and in so
doing liberated the Old City
of Jerusalem, which had
been occupied by Jordan
since 1949. Once more Jews
:could stand at the Western
Wall. Once again Christians
and Muslims from Israel
'could visit their holy places.
That the Government of
I Israel has invested so many
physical, financial and
human resources in
Jerusalem — new suburbs
aid new schools for Arabs
and for Jews, new hotels,
new roads, industrial parks,
improved social and health
[-Services, a free press —
Lghould come as no surprise.
(--- -Jerusalem has been the
heart of Judaism, and its
spiritual and symbolic
"spiritual
center, since the beginning
of Jewish history. Here, ac-
:2.x)rding to Jewish tradition,
Abraham made ready to
s-acrifice his son Isaac. Here
,King David established the
capital of his kingdom and
1 ,1bought the land on which his
son Solomon would build his
,temple. Jerusalem served as
the capital of every indepen-
e_ent Jewish nation; it was
never an Arab capital.
% For the Jewish people, the
,, spiritual and the physical
Jerusalem are inextricably
bound, its importance
CWithout compare. In all the
Tears of the Jewish disper-
sion, in every corner of the
'globe, Jews at worship have
turned toward Jerusalem;
I the devout Jew prays three
times a day for the holy city.
"And twice a year, at the con-
elusion of the Passover seder
and the Day of Atonement,
tall assembled repeat one of
mankind's oldest prayers —
"Next year in Jerusalem."
As Jerusalem celebrates
`--Lhe silver anniversary of its
unification, we reaffirm our
commitment that it will re-
main the eternal capital of
'Israel, a united city under
Israeli sovereignty. 0
