This Photographer's Delight
Also Looks Fit For The Stomach

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

T

he latest secret to be
let out in the restau-
rant game is the third
dining spot at this locale .. .
and presently having the look
of what could make it
permanent.
Hidden quietly in a corner
of Sugar Tree on Orchard
Lake Road, north of Maple, is
Paparazzi with its colorful
outside stone look and red,
green and white striped
awning.
Paparazzi, and a philosophy
of rather having people say
they had too much than not
enough, is proof positive that
you don't have to pay big
dollars for sizeable meals of
quality . . . People bags are
readily available to take
home lunch for the next day.
Framed photos by local, pro-
minent Detroit Free Press
photographer Ibny Spina are
all over the walls . . . Paparaz-
zi defined is that of a free-
lance photographer who
sneaks up on celebrities and
takes candids of them .. .
Tony has never had to use
stealthy tactics — celebs are
thrilled to have him take
their pics . . . There is one of
the late Sammy Davis Jr.
that's a classic.
The photo gallery look at
Paparazzi has a lot of other
pictures too, and cameras
galore . . . The interior design
is somewhat of an Italian
courtyard with a lot of lattice
work, tall columns topped
with sconces that look like
silver bowls but have halogen
bulbs inside, blue-checkered
tablecloths, recessed lighting,
etc.
There is a friendly at-
mosphere about Paparazzi
with its brass railing above a
low cement and brick wall
that separates booths and
table areas . . . Paparazzi
recently received its liquor
license after almost five
months . . . Its bar is all light
with underlighting and a
chrome foot rail . . . A
separate counter sector has
seats for five.
When it opened Dec. 20,
Paparazzi followed on the
footsteps of two ill-fated
operations, Ruby D's and
Gildy's . . . General Manager
Bob McWatt formerly manag-
ed 220 Merrill in Birm-
ingham and Casa Lupita in
Troy . . . One or the other of
its five owners is also almost
always at the restaurant .. .
Jerry Aaron, Joe Pick, Mary

Taylor, Steve Hoff and Ken
Eserow.
The dining presentations at
Paparazzi are colorful with
Chef Anthony Middlebrook a
former skilled cuisine star of
Golden Mushroom, Pike
Street and Le Pantos . . . His
full lunch and dinner menu of
pizza, pasta, seafood, veal and
chicken among Italian
specialties are prepared along
the healthy-minded side .. .
He uses only extra virgin
olive oil and his gourmet
pizzas can be gotten without
cheese, although the moz-
zarella is 2 percent low tat .. .
A children's menu also has an
assortment of offerings.
One of the waitpersons,
Evelyn Lossia, is a martial
arts expert, and has one of the
prettiest smiles around .. .
She'll soon be seen in the
movie Army of Darkness with
Sam Raimi . . . Evelyn has
theatrical ambitions, but
behind the scenes as a produc-
tion engineer . . . She was a
two-fisted student, attending
University of Detroit and St.
Mary's College at the same
time and graduating from
both with degrees . . . English
major, communication arts
and secondary education
(high school teaching) . . . In
the meanwhile, her fine
abilities as a Paparazzi
waitress are highly received
by many.

There seems to be a con-
certed effort to please, from
management on down at
Paparazzi . . . Waiter Mark
Taha, daytime hostess Hillary
Bale (Chuck), busboy Craig
Meklir and others.
One of the owners, Jerry
Aaron, is an attorney whose
fascination for the restaurant
business has been a longtime
love . . . Whatever eating spot
Jerry would go to around the
country, regardless where, he
invariably said, "I can do bet-
ter!" . . . Paparazzi is giving
him that chance and Jerry
doesn't want from lack of suc-
cess in whatever endeavor he
tackles.
Another owner, investment
banker Joe Pick, used to be
an "on call" youngster with
his two brothers while grow-
ing up in Aruba . . . Joe
remembers Friday nights
when he couldn't go out until
after 9 p.m. lest his presence
be needed for a minyan at the
nearby Congregation Beth
Israel synagogue.
Paparazzi is a big-surprise
restaurant . . . a place where
people can come and bring
the family to enjoy a meal

without overly paying for its
Italian and light continental
cuisine.
Sugar Tree has badly need-
ed a good restaurant . . . It
might possibly have finally
found one.
CONGRATS ... to Craig
and Ronna (Mittleman) Posen
in California . . . on their 11th
anniversary.
HERE'S WHAT . . . to my
knowledge is a first in the
restaurant business . . . three-
for-one (no error) on quality
food (fresh white fish, fresh
turkey, fresh rainbow trout,
etc.) . . . It's the celebration of-
fer that started today at
Rialto Cafe on Woodward just
south of Nine Mile . . . good
with coupon in The Jewish

News.
The fellows at Rialto Cafe
are so happy, they're doing
the three-for-one any hour or

Ample, delicious
portions will take
your eyes from the
walls.

day and no cutting corners on
their complete meals . . . The
three-for-one (sounds strange
because I've never written
about one of these before) also
includes everything from
soup to dessert and beverage.
Parking at Rialto is in front
again, plus access to the
restaurant by a new walkway
from the rear lot . . . three-for-
one . . . What'll they think of
next?

46TH ANNUAL golf and
