I OPEN SUNDAY 5 p.m. TO 10 p.m. 29269 Southfield Road north of 12 Mile In The Southfield Commons 569-1400 1 " 'Frum' Continued from preceding page The joke that finally tickled Mr. Leno enough to use resulted from a real-life experience in Mr. Silbermintz's home. "I was in a hurry to heat up a frozen pizza for dinner for my boys," he re- called. The directions said to heat at 300 degrees for ten minutes, "so I figured why not speed things up by setting it at 3,000 degrees for a minute." Success, even then, came slow- ly. Mr. Silbermintz had sold Mr. Leno only five jokes when, in 1986, he went to meet the come- dian after a performance in Long Island and Mr. Leno offered him the chance to come to Hollywood and work on a television special with him. Mr. Silbermintz was touched by the fact that Mr. Leno showed so much faith in him. He worked on the TV show for seven weeks, at a time when he was having fi- nancial difficulties. "That break saved me," he said. Mr. Silbermintz has only praise for Mr. Leno, as a comedi- an and as a mentsh. "Jay is what you see, a nice guy who cares about people. When I was struggling, he told me, 'Hang in there and I'll help you out.' And he did. "Jay observes everyday life in a fresh, creative way. He never writes material down. He just tells it, and if he gets a laugh, he keeps it. "I'm married to him," Mr. Sil- bermintz laughed. "He doesn't know it, though." While the idea of an Orthodox Jew from the Bronx writing ma- terial for a part Italian, part Scot- tish comedian from Andover, Mass. may seem incongruous, Mr. Silbermintz says that the two have many shared values. "He's a family man. He doesn't drink or smoke and he hates dirty or racist material," he not- ed about Mr. Leno who, he added, has come to learn a good deal about Judaism through his as- sociation with Mr. Silbermintz. "Jay is comfortable with my wearing a yarmulke, he knows words like Shabbos and shul, and once, when I brought a group of Orthodox friends to meet him back stage after a performance, and he came in and saw how qui- et we were, Jay said, 'oh, this must be the wrong room, it looks like they're sitting shivah.' " After faxing Mr. Leno about 70 jokes a week from his home in New Jersey for the last several years, Mr. Silbermintz can't wait to be "part of the chevra" (group) in Hollywood, which includes all- night comedy-writing sessions in Mr. Leno's kitchen. He plans to write most of his topical material at home, pacing around the house, but says "the best bits come when [the writ- ers] sit around together." As for adjusting to Orthodox Jewish life in L.A., Mr. Silber- mintz said that Orthodox Jews are the same everywhere, "al-
