Of the cracked and silent
Liberty Bell.
In the Jewish sense there is
tht admonition of testing
and always retaining many
suspicions.
That is the Jewish ap-
proach necessitated by life's
experiences.
It is to the credit of Norma
Goldman, the retired Latin
and Greek professor`' from

that the Norris poem is

Rapproachment?
With Whom?
Anxieties caused by
recollections about the noto-
rious Coughlin prejudices
-esulted in the suggestion of
rapproachment in interfaith
relations. In the best inter-
ests of supporting
Ecumenism, there should be
an awareness of our duties.
Rapproachment suggests
establishment or rees-
tablishment of harmonious
relations between peoples.
In the issue at hand, it is
Jews with Catholics. In this
aspect of the cause ad-
vocated by the Ecumenical
Movement there must never
be misrepresentation or
misinterpretation.
We have long adhered to
the process of Catholic-
Jewish friendship and aban-
donment of prejudices.
Therefore, with Catholics
there is a continuity not to
be besmirched by seeking
aboslution for a sinner.
In the instance of the
"Radio Priest" who created
some of the vilest anti-
Semitic rantings of the cen-
tury, there can never be rap-
proachment with his name
or memory. This sinner had
proved to be as vile to
Catholics as to Jews.
Neither his name nor his
sins will ever be means for
restoration of good relation-
ships. ❑
Proverbs, Anomalies
During' Mikahl Gor-
bachev's visit with Ronald
Reagan, a Russian proverb
was sensationalized. Espe-
cially interesting was the
mat3).er in which USA To-
day gave attention to it in
the following:
-2°- 7rbachev gave Ileagan
ook of Russiqn prov-
erb s, recalling how
Reagan quoted the say-
ings himself. Best known,
by Reagan in arms talks:
"Trust, but verify."
"Good, I've been using
them quite a bit," said
Reagan. " He needs some
new ones," added Nancy
Reagan.
Both proverbialist-
statesmen will surely have
something additional to
learn from a Hebrew proverb
with impressive advice.
Habdaihu v'Hasdaihu also
calls for respectfulness but
qualifies it with "suspect."
NEWS
had Mr. al-Badi remained,
he could have brought back
to his country a message of
peace from Israel.
"His absence is a political
gesture," Mr. Olmert added.
He commended the selec-
tion of "women's health
issues and development" as
the subject of this year's
technical discussions. In
Israel, women have always
worked alongside men in all
fields of national develop-
ment, he said.
Referring to the recent
immigrants to his country
from the former Soviet
Union and Ethiopia, Mr.
Olmert said that "special
health-promotion activities
were initiated for the
various new populations."

Israeli Delegate
Snubbed At Assembly
Geneva (JTA) — The
World Health Organiza-
tion's annual World Health
Assembly opened with a fa-
miliar display of anti-Israel
hostility here last week.
Despite ongoing peace
talks between Arabs and
Israelis on a variety of
issues, Health Minister
Ahmad Ben Saeed al-Bach of
the United Arab Emirates —
newly elected president of
the U.N.- sponsored
Assembly — refused to ac-
knowledge his Israeli
counterpart from the
podium.
When Israeli Health Min-
ister Ehud Olmert rose to
speak, Mr. al- Bach left the
chair.
The Israeli minister allud-
ed to the snub, saying that
