Fund-raiser Fisher
> Someone Mention
Max Fisher?
During the last 25 years,
says journalist and author
Peter Golden, no private
citizen in the American Jew-
ish community has played so
> profound a diplomatic role
between Washington and
Jerusalem as Max Fisher.
In his biography on Mr.
Fisher, Quiet Diplomat, soon
to be published by Cornwall
Books, Mr. Golden discusses
Mr. Fisher's role as one of
\ America's leading in-
dustrialists and philan-
thropists.
For the most part, the book
states, Mr. Fisher has lived a
life outside of the public eye.
"Few outside the inner
circles of government know
the extent to which his role
I
\-, as an advisor to every
Republican president since
Richard Nixon and every
Israeli prime minister since
Golda Meir was valued," Mr.
Golden writes. "His ano-
N,
/-' nymity was among his
greatest assets."
Mr. Fisher was born in
1908 to immigrant parents,
and he entered the oil busi-
ness in 1930. In 1959, he
l'\ merged his company, Aurora
' Gasoline Co. with Ohio Oil,
\_. earning $40 million for
( himself and his partners.
The company later became
Marathon Oil.
After the merger, Mr.
Fisher became immersed in
N
,_,
philanthropic fund-raising.

\/ "By nature, however,
Fisher was not suited for the
) whirl of socializing and
speechmaking that accom-
panied his style of philan-
thropy," Mr. Golden writes.
"He seemed friendly
enough, with a broad open
face and a firm handshake,
yet he wrestled with an in-
nate shyness."
