Republican Chair-
man Jim Alexander
has been thrust into a polit-
ical hot seat over a race bet-
ween three women for the
prestigious state Republican
committeewoman post.
Usually, the race remains
low-key.
Unfortunately for Mr.
Alexander and other party
officials, inner-party squab-
bling has lead to personal at-
tacks. The result has been
rumors of a recall of Mr.
Alexander, the GOP's first
Jewish chair for Oakland
County.
Although the source of the
rumors is unknown, Mr.
Alexander wants the
culprits to know that party
rules state that he can not be
recalled.
Rumors began after in-
cumbent GOP commit-
teewoman Ronna Romney
learned that one of her
challengers, Jewish attorney
Andrea Fischer, had been
endorsed by several Repub-
licans who backed Ms.
Romney in previous cam-
Paigns-
Among Ms. Fisher's sup-
porters was Mr. Alexander,
who said, "I'm not shedding
my loyalty to Ronna
Romney. I think it is time for
a change in committee
leadership. I am supporting
Andrea for all of the right
reasons."
Some Republicans, who
asked to remain anonymous,
believe the rumors were
started by people working
for Ms. Romney. Ms.
Romney denied any par-
ticipation in the scuttlebutt,
but said her feelings are
hurt.
"I don't ever remember
anything like this happen-
ing," Ms. Romney said. "I'm
the incumbent national
committeewoman, and as
such, you always feel you
have a safe haven. He (Mr.
Alexander) has made politics
fun for me. I never expected
this."
Ms. Romney, 48, has held
the GOP committeewoman
post for eight years.
Ms. Fischer, 33, is an ac-
tive volunteer for the Repub-
lican Party. She quickly
moved into the party
spotlight during John
Engler's bid for governor.
She was the campaign fi-
nance chair, working closely
with industrialist Max
GOP chief Alexander
Fisher, who served as Mr.
Engler's honorary finance
chair.
Since that time, Ms.
Fischer was the single
largest ticket seller (other
than the co-chairmen) for
President George Bush's
Detroit fund-raising dinner,
where she sat at a table bet-
ween the president and Mr.
Fisher.
Ms. Fischer co-chaired
Wednesday's fund-raiser for
Jewish Agency Political Ac-
tion Committee, a non-
partisan PAC formed a year
ago by private individuals to
raise money for state races.
Ms. Fischer also worked
for Mr. Bush when he was
vice president. Her most re-
cent task is fund-raising for
state Sen. David Honigman,
R-West Bloomfield.
Mr. Honigman is running
against former Oakland Cir-
cuit Judge Alice Gilbert and
former Oakland County
GOP Chairman Joseph
Knollenberg in the Aug. 4
Republican primary for the
11th District Congressional
seat.
Betsy DeVos, 34, a former
GOP county chair from
Grand Rapids who is the
daughter-in-law of Amway
founder Richard DeVos, is
the third candidate in the
running for commit-
teewoman. State party
representatives will elect a
GOP committeewoman on
May 30 during the Repub-
lican State Convention at
Cobo Center.
Michigan GOP commit-
teeman Chuck Yob, also of
Grand Rapids, is un-
contested in his re-election
bid.
Neither Mr. Engler nor
Mr. Fisher has publicly
commented on his choice for
the GOP committeewoman
job.
